Default 3w ignition swap to pirate

I was flying a 3W 50, ignition with 2 magnets, landed and switched off . no start again checked no spark and full battery power to module and trigger. Has anyone done a swap to another brand as the original is a horriffic price and the motor is getting old. Still has power but if I have to spend £130 (260 bucks) and postage may as well put it to a new more reliable motor.

The CH and the RCXL clone of CH work as good. They both somehow can ignore the first magnet and fire on the second. If I remember correctly the first magnet is installed with opposite pole to the second. Terry can set you up with a sensor that rotates to get the 28* advance needed for either to work. And/or slotting the sensor holder will allow using the origional screws. A spacer is needed or use shorter screws or the screws will be too long and penetrate too far into the bub.

You simply need to adapt the pickup of any new ignition, being careful to get the timing right, as they do not all work the same.

Some ignitions have automatic advance, in these you set the static timing about 4 deg. advanced and when the engine is running the ignition advances the spark up to 24 deg. as required by the RPM. I believe your 3W ignition is like this, also Falkon and a few others.

Other ignitions actually do the reverse, they start out with static timing at 28 deg. advance and then they retard the spark timing at lower speeds. C&H and the RCexl ignitions are examples of this method.

So you will need to know exactly how to set up the timing, but after that spark is spark, any ignition will pretty much work. I'd suggest the Rcexl, it's very popular, reliable, and inexpensive. You ought to be able to buy one for about $75, if you can't find one there I have them.
