With the muffler removed, look into the exhaust port. If there is a vertical web in the middle, which splits the exhaust port into 2, so to speak, then I believe this means it's a 25cc. The 30cc and up do not have this web. I have 2 Wolf Predator 1.8 engines which were based on a Homelite cylinder, and they do not have this web.
RPM depends on the prop and altitude. My 30cc, with auto-advance C&H ignition, will turn a variety of 18x8's in the 8,000+ range, 19x8's in the 7,000 rpm range, and seems really happy with a Mejzlik 18x6 at around 8800 rpm. This is with pretty stock diverter or wraparound mufflers. They run pipes on the Homelites for boats. Headers and pipes are available from Macs Products.

Great Planes makes the Giant Big Stick, available at Tower Hobbies for $250. My local hobby shop got it for me at $215. Servos are HiTec 645's.

cool looks like a neat platform for testing my homelite conversions.
knew they made it just always excluded it because of weight but it looks good with the homie.

Just got my New Tower hobbies in the mail the ARF went up to $279.99. Glad I got mine when I did. heres some more detailed pics of the engine. Any one know what gas mix is best 20:1, 32:1, AMS oil. My local chainsaw dealer suggest his Stihl 50:1. My flying club say to make sure I get ash-less oil? I guess it makes for less soot.

20:1 is way too much oil. I ran mine with 32:1 lawnboy ashless and it ran great with it. probably could have run 50:1 but with these dont go any less. the commercial gassers run 100:1 sometimes but homelite isnt going to last long. i went on towers website and it said 249.99 so who knows maybe the mail add is more expensive. I bought but never used some amsoil the lawnboy worked for my tests.

main thing to make sure of if you replace the plug is to always get a shielded plug which have the R in the first letter of the model. your RCJ6Y is good. I have the same i think in mine.

The ARF comes with engine standoff mounts, I didn't use them on mine, and had to add 2 1/4 ounces of lead to the nose and put the battery pack over the fuel tank in the nose.

there are acouple of cheap EI products out there but since you have to get rid of the flywheel and get a replacement prop adapter to fit the taper its going to need more than just the ei. its doable and would be better but it wont give you more power. also look for some locktite gasket maker or some red rtv and get rid of the gasket between the head and the crankcase it lowers the head and increases compression a bit will give you some more rpms. becareful not to get the red rtv or gasket material in the engine. If it hand starts with ease I would leave it alone. try bringing your prop down to a 18x6 and see if you cant squeeze some more rpms out of it. I used top flite on mine.
edit: CH igitions has a kit with ignition pick up hall censor magnet and prop adapter with the back taper to replace the fly wheel spacing.

Since your engine starts easily and runs well as is, converting it to EI in your case would not nescessarily be a good thing as the weight you will lose due to the conversion would have to be compensated for by additional ballast weight up front to retain the desired balance. However if you are able to shift stuff around without adding any more weight to keep the balance it would certaintly be an advantage to do so.

How do you tune this engine. i was running a little rough this weekend so I tried a few adjustments and made it worse. I finally got it back to the original settings. I found the high and low settings on the carb, but don't know the proper way to tune them. Thanks for the help.

RC Showcase has the best, easiest gas tuning directions I've seen. And they actually work. Just remember that gas engines are different than glow. Glow...you set the high needle first, and then come back and set the idle/low end needle. Gas is the opposite. Set the low end needle first, since it affects the high end. After the low end is happy, then go back and set the high end.

Update. I received an e-mail from my friend who use to be stationed with me. He just got back from Balad AB in Iraq, and he tells me the Homelite engine he sold me was a 25cc weed eater motor. He says he doesn’t convert weed eaters anymore, and that he uses chainsaw motors now. They get more horsepower, and don't require any trimming of metal except cutting off the shaft on the chain side. So now that I know its a 25cc weed eater, is the 18 x 8 prop to big for this engine?

Weed eaters develop power at higher rpm. Try something more like APC 16x8, 17x6 or possibly 17x8 to get the most performance. You should be seeing rpm in the 8,000 - 9,000 range.
Those thoughts are based upon my own personal experience with my 23-30cc gas engines. Your mileage may vary.....

wood...if it's a TopFlite or Zinger you're kinda wasting your time. If you want to get decent thrust and performance out of that engine, you are going to want an APC in those sizes. It's night and day. Really really.

Walbro has the service manual for download here - http://wem.walbro.com/distributors/s...s/WAseries.pdf
It also includes tuning instructions.
Nice looking plane too! I think I'll probably end up with one of those if I ever convert another engine to put in one...
