Default building an rc help

I am trying to build either a buggy, monster truck, or ashort coursetruck. I am having difficulty putting together a parts list, and there is just so much out there, I don't know where to start.

Here is what I know I need:
A rolling chassis
A motor
An ESC
A battery pack
A reciever and controller
A servo

I would like some advice upon what I need and what you would recomend I get and where to find it.

Thanks,
Crash

That list is pretty much complete, maybe a bodyshell too?

if you really want to "build" it though, you should look for a kit. Then you'll be able to build it from the ground up, and know what goes where and how to replace it if something breaks. I've just had 2 rolling chassis's come to me in the past week... and I somehow have 3 screws leftover from taking them apart & putting them back... not good!

Good luck with it though, its not too hard a task,
I doubt it'll turn out as bad as my cars xD

What would you suggest for a kit then?

I would like to build the truck because in end, I get way more experience building it, and I get more joy out of it, too. Building it, that is.

With the overabundance of RTR vehicles out there, Tamiya and Associated are the only two that come to mind that make kits in the categories you're considering.

I am considering an SC10.  The chassis looks a little weak.  They are cheap, but are they reliable?

I would get one of those... if they weren't 700 something dollars.  I am looking to stay under the 200 dollar range.</p>

You forgot the all important first step: Decide what type of vehicle you want.

Once you do that you can start looking for kits within your budget.

the sc10 is a great kit to build, it's very simple and reliable. If you're worried about the chassis, particularly in the front, there are a variety of chassis braces on ebay that would reduce the chance of breakage. a lot.

I have officially decided that I want to build a short course truck.  I want to do build it cheap, but I need to know where to get all of my self.  I am thinking about an SC10, but I would like to have a couple more options than that.  Any ideas?

So far as I know the SC10 is the ONLY short course truck available in a kit. Slash is RTR only, Strike is RTR only, Blitz will most likely be RTR only, and the SC10 comes in kit or RTR.

That is sort of what I am looking for... so then I can say, "You got that rtr? I bought all the parts for mine seperately, then put it all together!" Well, something like that, but thats what I really want to do.
