From what I have heard it is a good brushless setup. I prefer the Mamba Max or the Sidewinder setups from Castle Creations.

great setup. i would also prefer a mamba max, mamba max pro, or a sidewinder to the vxl however the vxl motor is worlds different from the castle motors. i ran one in my xxx-t and it ran super cool with super high gearing. it hit speeds the castle motor hit had more torque and never got above 140. i was so surprised. if i had done anything close to what i did with that motor with my castle motor i wouldn't have a motor right now.

yup, traxxas's brushless system, velineon, aka VXL.
the ESC has it's problems (claimed by many), but if you want water proof go for it.

as for the upgrade, in RC car action magazine the traxxas ad says to go to http://www.traxxas.com/powerup
but I still get a 404, so maybe they aren't doing it full swing yet.

I cannot elaborate, as I have never dealt with it, but I'm sure someone will come and say more. I think the button starts to stick after awhile, and there are far less tuning options than Castle's ESCs, but it's waterproof out of the box.
Like I said, I've just heard that many people have had problems, I'm sure there are many more that haven't had a hint of a problem. And Traxxas's customer service is quite good.
