How to range check a DJI Phantom 3?

A friend has just bought a Phantom 3 and we were trying to determine how you do a radio range check on it before you commit to fly. The manual does not mention range checking or how to place the Tx into a low power mode to allow a range check to be carried out.

Is this common practice with drones that have a return to home function or is there a way of doing a reduced power range check on the Phantom 3?

Bif difference from all my fixed wing issues!

One of the most important aspects of drone photography is ensuring that your photos are accurately captured. This includes making sure that your drone properly ranges from subject to subject. DJI Phantom 3 drones have a variety of modes, including static, panoramic, and selfie modes. In order to check range correctly, you will need to use one of these modes and fly the drone near the object or person you want to photograph.
Once positioned close enough, press down on the controller's shutter button and hold it until "phantom return" appears in the bottom right corner of your screen. release the shutter button as soon as it appears so that your photo is saved onto your SD card. Make sure not to move or touch anything while taking this photo; otherwise, you may end up ruining your shot!
