Default how long can you leave fully charged lipos?

Hey guys,

as the title suggests, I'd like to know how long I can safely leave my lipos fully charged?
My ESC died the other day, and as I'm waiting for another to arrive, from China, it could be another 2 or 3 weeks before it arrives

what do you reckon? How long can I leave them fully charged? what are the risks? should I discharge them?

Cheers in advance
Martin

You can leave them as long as you want, the damage is cumulative as time goes by. If I knew for a fact I wouldn't use for 3 weeks I would surely discharge them to around 3.8 per cell (and I rarely discharge)

The best is to charge and immediately run them of course, not allowing them to spend a lot of time at full charge.

Thats plain wrong! It will cause battery to lose power over time. I don't mean it will discharge I mean it will permanently effect the battery. Thats why they come at storage voltage and you charger should have a storage mode.

Erm Guver is correct.
You can leave then as long a you want.
The damage is accumulative
They should be stored at storage voltage

Since you know already that you won't be using them for 2 or 3 weeks, bring them to storage state.
I try to keep mine in that state as much as possible, they will remain good packs for much longer and their performance will remain more consistent.
Like mentioned, it is cumulative, the more you do it, the more the internal resistance builds up and your packs gets less and less efficient.
Have I done it in the past? Yes and I still do it once in a while but I try to avoided it.

Dan.

Yeah, I built a discharger from automotive tailight bulbs for those times when I charged but couldn't run. Works much better/faster than the one built into my charger. I don't like to leave them charged more than a day.

Hi Martin. Fellow Aussie.
Since you asked a very basic question about Lipo maintenance, there might be a few other things that you should know about Lipos & their care. Have a read through all of this & your life with Lipo's will be much better.
If you are already aware of most of this, then I apologise for being a bit presumptuous in thinking that you didn't.

thanks for the link 785boat, I've since found that site to be very useful

I've discharged all my batteries to storage charge, which according to my charger is 11.4V for 3S lipos

I built a discharger using an esc, brushless motor some Argos and balsa. It works a treat and as a bonus it flys too!
