Default Boat electric question?

I have 2 older boats running 14.4 V with the motors wired in series using manual speed controls and gearbox running one shaft. The motors are stock 540 types-are the motors sharing the voltage or running on 14.4 volts each? The boats run good, but I would like to use EVX 2 speed control without frying the motors.Would it be best to keep motors wired in series or get 2 14V 550 motors and wire in paralell?

series connected motors would run 14.4/2 volt, so 7.2 each...
parallel would run 2 @ 14.4 volt from the same battery, so 14.4 each...

there are 540 sized brushless motors out there, that are a direct replacement for the older brushed systems... Perhaps look into that?

Thanks for the response but brushless is not an option -I already have 14.4v speed controls and it would be a lot cheaper to replace motors than go brushless.I can get 2 14v motors for less than 1 brushless motor, not to mention the esc that I already have.

Ok,Kershaw rc motors. They are brushed motors in the 700 series. Check them out. I had a 650S on 3S and still have it but like everything else , it's gone from stock for good. He has 700's.

You should be able to use the EVX2 speed control with the motors you have now. Plug one motor into one set of leads and the other motor into the other set of motor leads. The 16.8v (series batteries) is split between the two motors.

Thanks for the advice-I run a Kershaw 700 in my old ElectroVee hull with a 4mm flexshaft and it runs great.I thought the EVX supplied 14.4 V to each motor so I bought 2 Titan marine 14V motors for it.The specs for the EVX say it will run a 540 or 550 motor so maybe I will run the current motors until they fry.[8D]

I had a ElectroVee with a 700-8.4 on 12 nimH cells and it ran 29 mph tops. The thing is they sold for $25.00 for a bare hull. I had a Kunz waterproof/watercooled esc. Like you typed, it ran great on a Kershaw 700. I have a Kershaw 650S on 3S and a 637 Octura prop in a Arpro 1.Minneapolis/St.Paul had a boat site which ran ElectroVees and was in Edina.
