RE: NQD Hydro
Hi Sonnich
Im still working on the rear end of the boat, its a real mess at the moment and pics wouldnt show the detail, im re - profiling the rear ride shoes and the wings that hold the back onder the water, are you running both batteries in the nose now ? ive actually put one beside my motor and one in the nose as the front sponsons dont seem to provide as much lift as they should, after modifing the back, i may start on the front, im thinking a spray rail is needed to give initial lift, and lift in the corners, if you flip the hydro over and take a look at the front tips on the sponsons, they are round both sides, and are inlike a conventional hydro sponson, i think this may have something to do with the nose heavy reaction

At this point it is easy to get frustrated and toss the boat aside for later. YOU CAN'T GIVE UP YET! I actually boat the same boat on ebay with the intentions of modifying it. After about a month when they didn't ship it I demanded a refund. Very interested to see what you come up with for a final result.

Dont worry, ill keep trying new stuff until the hull looks like swiss cheese
Matt, I hope toyr mods work out great.....so I can copy them
Im moving the CG a little further back by installing the motor in the front again......its also easier to get to the batteries.
btw, I have to do something about the stock seal between the hull and hatch. Its leaking alot of water through there, especialy when the boat is nose heavy, and water rushed over the deck.

RE: NQD Hydro
i ended up sealing my hull all round the outside with silicon, so i can get it apart when i need to, it needs to be re done because after all my cutting and bogging, i have had to remove the silicone.
what i plan on doing is once i get it to plane by itself and stay on a plane, then i will make it look pretty until such time as it performs im not to bothered about its appearance, my rear end mods are finished on one side, i still have some sanding and shaping to do on the other side, but should have it finished for a test run today, i cant find my bluetooth dongle to swap the pics from my phone over at the moment will get it back today i hope

RE: NQD Hydro
Ok i finally got my boat going better, it will plane now and stays on plane until you back off, or the battery goes flat i have a good roostertail and the rear wings are up clear of the water, my batteries however, doing a huge job to help get this 3kg boat moving, are going flat rather quick, tomorrow im going to run 14 3000mah cells instead od the 12 2100's i have been running, hope the extra power does the trick
i have a video to post later tonight - watch this space

RE: NQD Hydro
Hey Guys still having issues finding somewhere to host the video cause its 18mb, ill try make it smaller... tried the boat the other day on 14 cells 3000mah nimh, went ok but the rear wings are still catching water, i was looking at the 1/8's that have wings and the wings are thin and dont go lower than the deck, in actually planning to give my wings the chop tonight because even with the wings modded to give SOME hydrodynamics they still catch water and create tremendous drag.
measured my rear shoes tonight, ive added about 5mm to the rear of the ride shoes to give attack angle, im just heating up a knive right now to cut them crapper wings off!! hehe , plus i plan to paint my boat the same as the next 1/8 hydro i will get which is a 1997 yellow appian jeronimo, it doesnt have the wings ( i have a dumas miller american 1/8 currently but my girlfriend was moving the bed and the hydro, bed was leaning against wall, fell down, leg went through hydro!! wasnt happy at the time)
have you made any progress at all Sonnich ?? check my club forum i posted earlier as i have posted some wing mods pictures there
Cheers

RE: NQD Hydro
hehe.......well, you do live in hurricane alley over there
But I must admit, today it is quite windy too, so I took the Hydro out instead, and tried out my "new" setup. [8D]
Im very pleased with it now, and wont change it.......unless Matt`s is flying at lightspeed compared to mine with his mods
A little bumpy because of the ripples in the water, but it is going the fastest yet.
Ill try to get some video of it soon....let someone else do the filming so you can see whats going on properly.
I received my new LRP 3300 packs, and boy....are they 10 times better than my old ones.
Much more running time, and they keep the power level up right to the end. Motor and batts are not very hot, and run time is quite long. I think ill try a larger prop now.
I mesured the one I have and it is exactly 42mm
It is taking in so much water that its not funny. I have taped up the inlet, and exhaust and found a tad thicker black foam for the seal at the hood/hull.
I hope it works better now.

RE: NQD Hydro
Hi SJN
Looking good man !! thats going really well, is that with no hull mods at all ? Im considering making my strut a lot deeper and adding angle to my shaft.... your submerged drive seems to help you get the boat off the mark well , it looks about the same speed as mine is going, are you still running Motor in the nose and batteries in the middle?

Yes, its still looks like post #66 with the batteries right behind the motor.
I have done nothing to the hull.....other that cut the extra fins off the old shaft tunnels....
Im having trouble keeping my servo and rx alive
Im water tighting the servo and RX, as its almost impossible to keep water out of the hull.
Im adding water cooling to the motor.....just because I have it lying around.....might as well use it.

RE: NQD Hydro
I have a question as I've just picked up a semi scale hydro kit from ebay for £6.50!
It's a strange mixture of features as I just built it up to a stock kit, there's a pretty nice 2:1 hughy style reduction box with it but a really cheap propellor and rudder arrangement.
Anyway my question is this, where is the ideal place for the turn fin, I know it should be on the right hand side as close to the CofG as possible but does that mean on the inside of outside of the sponson, the kit fin is outside but really cheaply made and it pivots backwards (suicidal if that happens at speed)

RE: NQD Hydro
Ah ha and here is the finished article!
Hopf Alloy rudder and 40mm Carbon prop here I come
Do you like the Alloy turn fin I knocked up out of some scrap, I guessed at a position in the end

RE: NQD Hydro
No sorry, I dont have a Videocam and my able assistant (missus) won't even take photo's at speed let alone mini movies
Rest assured however that it is very quick for it's size, I can't reccomend it enough (On calm days, I'd hate to try it in wind, I think it would take off), more details in my marina under my profile and some more photo's in this thread:
[link=http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=352106&page=4]RC Groups Micro Boats[/link]
By the way excellent job with the NQD, looks like a reasonable turn of speed, I'm a a bit scared of the left hand turns though as Hydro's normally only turn right without flipping!
I think you have plenty of power there to get a heavy hull like that moving so well, without checking back through the thread did you sharpen the sponson ride points?
