I was using my SV27 on the weekend and I had a second NiMh battery explosion....... time for LiPo!!!!
I have been running the stock boat for less than 5 minutes after the first battery explosion. The first happened on the water with the boat running at top speed a year ago.
This time I had stopped the boat , recovered it, removed the hatch tape, checked temps, removed battery A and was going for the second battery when it exploded. There was a spray of hot material in my face and hands. The hood was open so there was fire at the motor and the the styrofoam at the front was also on fire. I had to dunk the boat to put the fire out. This explosion happened 3 minutes after the boat had been shut down.
Guys, as a warning, wear safety glasses when removing batterys if you are running Nimh. I was very lucky not to get any eye damage , my forehead got pitted nicely!!
Now to get some good Lipos and a new charger............... any suggestions?

That's the reason I immediately put a fan on the NiMH after a run.
NiMH keep on heating up for quite some time, when the boat is out of the water, that cooling factor is gone and using a fan remedies that.
Fortunately I only had one cell blowing up inside a sealed hull once, the hull blew up like a balloon, making the epoxy crack all over...
Good thing were running got Lipo's from this season on.
Regards, Jan,

I have run nimh for years and have never heard of something like this happen. There has to be some other factors in why the exploded. Anyhow welcome to the lipo club.. do your homework and properly handle and use lipos. My rule #1 is never skimp on chargers and batteries.

I've only had one round cell pop on me in 15 years. It was a bad cell and a dead cold pack. Went Bang in the middle of the lake so I waited for my SV to come to shore. No boat damage and lucky no mess.
Glad to hear your eyes are fine!!!![8D]

when the cells get too hot, they leak hydrogen gas (the H in NiMH) which when mixed with the right concentration of air explodes. I've had a few cells vent on my when they get too hot. I immediately put them somewhere away from anything flamable & let them cool down. Luckily I've never yet had one explode. I have had a Lipo cell catch fire in one of my boats after the ESC shorted out which in turn shorted out the Lipo. that wasn't pretty either.
