Which Battery Connector
Hi All,
I have purchased two LiPo batterys now and find that I have two different types of connector. One is a 4 mm gold bullet connector, the othera Tamiya connector.I also see that there is a third type called Deans T, and yet another called a TX60. As this is early days for me, I want to standardise on one type of connector, soIcan charge batterys and interchange batterys and ESC's easily. What is the recomended way to go?
Thanks Geoff.

RE: Which Battery Connector
Hi Geoff,
All my lipos terminate with Deans ultra plugs female. I use 3.5 to 6.5mm bullet connectors on the esc motor wires, depending on the unit I'm using.
You will hear from many that Deans suck, can't handle amps, this that etc. I have never had a problem with them. When you solder a deans, simply put male and female together to solder and the pins will stay tight and not warp.
Me personaly, I don't like any kind of bullet connector on a battery. I rip em' straight off, one at a time and put Deans on.
Having a standardised connection on all your batteries etc, certainly makes life easier.

RE: Which Battery Connector
deans are decent, it is what's on all of my batts and esc's, but i think bullets are better if you are going to get into thick gauge wire and high amp draw motors

RE: Which Battery Connector
In my boat racing club, most of the members use deans on their batteries because they are easy to use, easy to attach, and come standard on most of the batteries we use. I had batteries that came with bullets and the fact that the ends could easily touch and spark scared me. bullets are good for motors but are cumbersome when you have to constantly connect and disconnect them.

RE: Which Battery Connector
we are on the other side of this.. my friends use bullets because of their performance and ease of use
when they are installed correctly they are much easier to use than deans, and the fact they out performe deans is big

RE: Which Battery Connector
this is entirely your decision, i have deans ultra connectors (ridged for easy pull apart) and have never had any problems but i agree that bullets are better however after doing research, bullets are'nt actually that good, 3.5mm bullets only handle upto about 70a, 4mm upto 100a, these are not far off deans
the other reason is if i changed to bullets then they would all be 6mm but these dont come with shrouds
so i suggest deans connectors

so 10 more amps is almost 20% more amp flow on the 3.5mm bullets, that's big numbers and the 4mm going 100amps is over 60% more amp flow!
and that's why I use 5.5mm bullets because they flow over 150amps cont. without heat or extra resistance!
so that would be 2.5 x more flow than deans, and when you use them in aplications like I do well that's big numbers and also means my escs will run cooler and my motors will run at their top game

RE: Which Battery Connector
my 2 cents:
I don't see how anything could be easier to use than Deans connectors. (they are lower amp draw but they are simple)
Only 10 amps is not important unless that's where you operate. My build will have a 120amp ESC and batts that are good for 110 so going with connectors that are good for 60 doesn't make alot of sense. If you think you'll get into big amp draw then go bullet. If you think you'll stay in the relm of a warmed up Supervee then deans are probably fine. Not a big deal to convert. you can get 10 pairs of the 6mm for 6 bucks.

RE: Which Battery Connector
I agree, if you don't need much, then deans are great..
I love the micro deans for my small rc cars and trucks
I've made the switch to bullets on all my other rc and will not go back to deans. for me bullets just work so much nicer, and the extra amps they can deliver really do help

RE: Which Battery Connector
Hi All,
thanks for your thoughts.
I have decided to standardise as best I can on XT60 connectors, based on a statement from HK
that they "will begin to include the XT60 on all batteries up to 3,000mAh in capacity in the near future!" http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...idProduct=9572 and that I can't find Deans connectors in the HK store. (I'm comfortable shopping at HK they were my first internet shopping experience).
Where I have batterys with bullet connectors, I'll make up bullet to XT60 adaptors, and where I have batterys with Tamiya, I replace them with XT60.
Do let me know if you think there is anything wrong with my logic here.
Thanks Geoff.

RE: Which Battery Connector
Is the 3000 Mah battery the largest you are going to be using? Otherwise, you might want to look at what they put on the their larger batteries. I do think that the Xt60's are a good connector and they are far less expensive than the Dean's I still have the Dean's, but may switch to the XT60's on my 2200 mah 3S batteries in the future.
Best Regards,
Curtis

RE: Which Battery Connector
Hi Geoff,
There is no doubt that some of these guys make sense about big bullet connectors passing better current flow than a deans plug. I'm a hack and use deans because they are available to me locally & I have converted everything for my charger. Racers I am sure would use 5mm+ bullets on probably everything. I just can't have plugs like that on batteries as I don't think it is 100% safe, that's all. No arguements, that's just me. What I mean by safe is, that kids, nephews, the brainless could maybe jam them together?
Also, I have deans on 1/8 car that pulls over 86amp, can be seen on rccaraction forum & boats with deans that are data logged approaching 100amp on V1 eagle tree. Granted I do use 6.5mm bullet for motor/esc, but deans on all lipo, even 6s.
Just by bit mate.
See ya
Peter

RE: Which Battery Connector
I had deans on my Revo that pulled over 180amps, and now with bullets in runs like I upped the C rating in my packs!
Also the bullets don't get hot and melt solder like my deans did, also my Revo MMM seams to run cooler with the 5.5mm bullets

RE: Which Battery Connector
TC5 connectors are 5mm bullets polarized so no problems like plain bullets but are easy to use like deans. Rated at 120a good for 90% of all applications.

RE: Which Battery Connector
Another reason I like the 5.5mm bullets is the fact I can have 3 2s packs wired together in series (6s) without any extra connectors and or wires..
here is a picture of two of my 2s packs with 5.5mm connectors in a 4s set up

little f****r got me back years later though

Do you run the 2s set up in an SV27? If so what kind of run time do you get?? Thanks.
