Default HELP, Boat Experts! Need Speedo/Motor & Other Advice

Need some help from somebody who knows:

I built this boat as a kid back in the 70's. I want to make it go again. It used to be nitro, but I'm into electric stuff (just not boats). I'm looking for recommendations for a speed controller, motor and cooling system...and anything I might be forgetting. Any help with how I might mount the motor would be appreciated as well. I already have rudder, prop, servos and radio gear.

The boat is 33 inches long and weighs a whopping 5 pounds! I want the power to push this wooden rig about 40mph on 4s LiPo...if possible....tell me if I'm crazy.

Thanks for any help

The submerged drive will make that request more difficult. Do you plan to run it as is?

Could you run 4s2p?
Budget?

Yes, I plan to run it as-is. Yes, I plan to run on 4s. No budget. I know it will have to be overpowered to get the speed I want. That's OK.

Thanks

4sp2 works out to close to 14.8v @ 10 000mAh

If you do this, I would run a Neu 1521 1.5D and a Castle Hydra 240LV.

Start small on the prop since you will be fully submerged. I'd imagine somewhere around 40mm and watch heat build up.

Sounds good. So that's a 1860kv motor on 14.8v, which works out to 27,528 RPM's...is that correct? Any idea how many amps that motor will pull?

I thought the 1521 1.5D was 1900kv but either/or is close enough.

That motor can and will pull somewhere around 150+ Amps if asked for. The 1D and 1.5D motors draw the juice.

On your setup I'd prefer the low unloaded prop RPM. And also, if converted to surface drive you can still run this exact setup just with a prop change.

OK, nice setup and I love NEU motors. Considering the usage the boat will get (1-2 hours-per-year), it might be a little much...but I might go that route.

If I lower my speed requirement a bit (say low 30's) is there a suitable motor/ESC combo for a better price (that won't melt)?

Any motor mounting tips for this rig?

Thanks for your help!

Drop down one motor size and use a Hydra 120.

Thanks for all your help, Ryan.

How about a 1515 2D (about 2000kv) with the Hydra 120?

I would run a 2.5D. You want to reduce RPM in order to kep the same prop but lower overal current draw.

Overal the 4s2p, 1521, hydra 240 would be my choice. This would be a perfect setup transferable to any 34" mono hull if you ever feel the need.

Decided to go milder. This boat is for playing on vacation. It might get an hour or two of use per-year...just want to get somewhat on plane. Thinkin' of going with:

Hydra 120 / Feigao 12XL (1390kv) on 4s2p 14.8 / 8000mah
Starting with a 40mm prop

See any problem with this?
Thanks

Also, I have a Neu 1515 1Y (2200kv). How do you think it would work out with the Hydra 120? KV is probably pushing it, but I thought I'd ask.

Thinking of going the following route (because I already have batteries):

Hydra 120 / Feigao 12XL (1390kv) on 5s2p 18.5 / 10000mah
Starting with a 40mm prop

PM replied to. I wouldn't use the 1515 1Y on 4s. Save that for a good hull.
