Hi,
I am going to change my steering on one of my cats. Currently it being steered through stainless cables going through the fake rams and into the hull.
What I want to do is get rid of the cables and run a rod from the servo straight to the rudder. Using the cables there is to much play, rudder never seems to centre properly when you come out of a turn. Oh and the cables seem to break a fair bit.
My Question is is there anything else that can be used to seal the hole up where the rod goes through the hull besides using one of those rubber boots that we all use.
The boots just dont look good.

There's a reason why we all use them....... because they work!

Looks and function sometimes collide...this is one part where there just is no other alternative.

I agree...maybe try to use something that at least looks a little better like the Redline pushrod seal mounts and Aeromarine pushrod seal combo. I am currently using them and they work perfect!

You can use Antenna plastic tubing glued in place and 2-56 size rod will slide inside it. I use this once in a awhile, nice and clean.

If you are having trouble breaking cables and centering problems, I would say your cable is way too thin.

I have also done cable type push pull on Cats. I use Sullivan Golden rod wire. This size wire ALSO fits nicely into Antenna tubing.

My Push pull systems never have play in them and never stretch, pretty hard to stretch braided 2-56 cable...

Hey BACKEMF...you and Scott are both from towns called MILTON! I know, I know...i'm very observant...LOL!!

Good idea on the antenna tube...I use that system on my Tunnel hulls. I was just thinking that he wanted to switch to a pushrod (push/pull) system...

Some of the guys over hear are using the disposable ear defenders (little foam plugs) push the rod through the centre and then squash the plug into the exit hole.

thanks for the replies, well I went and bought some thicker braided stainless steel wire and swaped the cables over. i will try that at the pond tomorrow and see if that makes a difference with the steering.
If it doesnt then I will change it to a rod system.
I know the boots work well but they arent the nicest looking. I just wanted it to look clean.

Hi Peter,

If you don't like the looks of the rubber boots, mount them inside the boat.

But on the water and at speed, who's going to notice if the boots are on the inside or outside...?

Main point seems to me, is to have a reliable and watertight steering sytyem.
