25" Mono RC boat build
<div>So I decided to build a 25" Mono hull RC boat over this summer. I got the plans off of modelpowerboats.com . Today I got some wood. I am going to be using 3mm birch ply for the main frame and .4mm birch ply for the skin. I will post more updates once I start cutting. Here is the wood and my plans:</div><div></div><div>http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...2/DSCN3104.jpg</div><div>The wood</div><div></div><div>http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...2/DSCN3105.jpg</div><div>The plans</div><div></div>Once I have built the hull I think that I will put a brushless motor in it. But I am open to offers, and I would also like to ask what are your preferred brands of boat motors?

RE: 25
Excellent. Good to see others building from ground zero.
As for motors, I only use Neu's with Castle ESC's in the cars and boats. They perform excellent and last forever. Cheaper option is the Leopard motors. Anything more than 40mph will be difficult to handle. 2s will be plenty for a hull of this size. Ryan |
RE: 25
<div>I have cut out the plans for the boat, and now I am making a cardboard mockup to make sure everything fits. I was not sure if it would because I scaled up some of the plans on one printer and the rest on another. I wanted to make sure they were the right size. Here are some pics of the cardboard build:</div><div>

I am working on cutting out the transforms now.</div> |
RE: 25
When you say scaled up, you had to scale it up to 25" correct?
Excellent Progress. It's always good to check well before dedicating yourself to possible problems. Ryan |

<div>Cardboard transforms are all cut out. I will start building the cardboard version tonight. Should be done in a few days. And I will be sure to post plenty of pictures.</div>

RE: 25
What is the beam of that hull? Is it me or does it look a bit narrow.
Ryan |
RE: 25
It is a little bit narrow. It is about 25" long by 7" wide.

<div></div><div>This morning I started cutting out the pieces. I am using a jigsaw with a metal blade, because the wood blade cuts to fast for such thin wood. I am going to cut more pieces tonight and I should be finished cutting in a few days. Here is how far I have gotten:</div><div></div>http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...2/DSCN3172.jpg

Good stuff. Have you selected a power system yet?

RE: 25
<div>I am just finishing up cutting the pieces of wood for the main frame. I also made a stand for the boat. It is a simple 3 piece stand with a lip around the bottom so that it can be a parts tray. It fits the cardboard version well. Now all I need to do is add padding to the v shape that holds the boat so that it doesn't scratch the wooden version.</div><div>

RE: 25
It depends on what you wish to do. I would prefer to run on 2s lipo while other may suggest higher.
You need a base line of where to start based on your personal preference then I can recommend from there. Ryan |

RE: 25
<div>I did some cutting, and I have the frame almost all cut out. Now I just need to hollow out the centers of the bulkheads to reduce weight, do some sanding, build a jig and then I can glue it! Right now it all fits together perfectly, but it has some splinters.</div><div>

RE: 25
Don't worry about weight too much. Just hollow out what you need for access. With Lipos, weight isn't a big factor.

RE: 25
<div>Today I did some drilling sanding and gluing. I drilled some holes in the flat pieces of wood so the inside of the boat was all one air compartment. Then I sanded the burs off, made a spacing jig and started gluing the frame. While I am writing this the glue on the last bulkhead is drying. So exciting :)</div><div>Pics:</div><div></div><div>http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...2/DSCN3345.jpg</div><div>http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...2/DSCN3346.jpg</div><div>http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...2/DSCN3347.jpg</div>http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...2/DSCN3348.jpg

RE: 25
<div>Today and yesterday evening I was busy. I have glued on the bottom planks on the bottom of the v. It is really starting to look like a boat. I also cut off the little tabs on the frame that you use when glueing it with the spacing jig. Here are some pictures:</div><div>

RE: 25
<div>Hello.</div><div></div><div>The boat is going good, but it is going to be on hold for the next few days. I am waiting on snail mail for some more wood and epoxy. But I have some questions: Does anyone have suggestions for some good quality hardware? And a good power system?</div><div></div>Thanks, Zane

RE: 25
<div>So today I got all of the rest of the parts for the &nbsp;boat in the mail. A few days ago I also finished epxoying the inside of the hull. I do this to add strength, and seal the wood incase the boat ends up sinking at some point. I also went to the hardware store and got the varnish and seal for the outside of the hull. All I need to do now is finish up the hull and install the electronics and drivetrain. There isn't much else to say.</div><div></div><div>Here are some pictures:</div><div></div><div>http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...2/DSCN3443.jpg</div><div>http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...2/DSCN3442.jpg</div><div>All done with the epoxy. It is shiney!</div><div></div><div>http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...2/DSCN3444.jpg</div><div>Even without the deck on it, it looks very much like a boat</div><div></div><div>http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...2/DSCN3445.jpg</div><div>Cutout the deck</div><div></div><div>http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...2/DSCN3446.jpg</div><div>Holding the deck on to see how it looks.</div><div></div><div>http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...2/RK000010.jpg</div><div>3s Turnigy lipos for the boat</div><div></div><div>http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...2/RK000013.jpg</div><div>Motor and Lipos in the boat. RE: 25
I have been doing alot on the boat over the last week or so. I have been so busy that I forgot to post an update. This morning I put the last coat of polyurethane on the hull, and it has now dried. So exciting! I also am almost done with the hatch cover. here are a few pictures: I will post more when I am totally done building ithttp://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...2/RK000066.jpghttp://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...2/RK000062.jpg

RE: 25
<div>So last evening I went to our friends pool to try it out. Of course I couldn't get up to anywhere near full speed, but I ran through most of a battery pack, and I think it went well. There is still one place where a few drips of water can come in, but I will fix that. Hopefully in the next few days I can get to a bigger lake to really try it out. And my I really like the realistic sounds the stinger drive made, because the prop sucked in some air. The sound is muted in the video because of all the background noise. Here is the video:</div><div></div>http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...lfirstrun1.jpg

RE: 25
<div>Today I got out to lake Chachuma to run my boat in a lake and see how fast it could go. Well it is a reservoir, so of couse they said no. So then we went to the Santa Ynez rive and found a place big enough to run the boat. It worked pretty well, and was so fast. I still need to fine tune my weight balance so it doesn't porpoise. In the video I get to about 3/4 throttle. Before the video started I went to full throttle I porpoised out of control and flipped. So i am not trying that again till I fix the weight balance. Here is a video:</div><div></div>http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...secondrun1.jpg
