"Fast Fun" - Need Advice
Relative newbie here looking for advice. Last ran RC Buggies about 15 yrs ago and built/racedC/L Planes up to about 5 Yrs ago.
Confused on the whole LiPo & Brushless Motor thing. Building a couple hydroplanes (1:12 and 1:10 classic hydroplanes, so apx 30". See http://www.astecmodels.co.uk/plans.htmfor example) along with my brother & uncle to "Run for Fun" here on the lake. While these are striclty "Fast Fun" we want decent equipment WITHOUT going broke. Batteries:Thinking a 2x 2S for ballance. I have seen mixed reviews on the HobbyKing/Turnigy, but for 2S45C 5000mah, you can't beat the price. And what about chargers? I have seen everything from 10W to 1000W, Programmable, Multi-Pack, "power supply required"... Not sure what is good and what is bad, what range I should be looking at, et. Prices from <$10.00 - >$500.00 Motor: This thing doesnt have to fly, but up on plane and GO would be nice. Does anyone make a fun grade motor? Again, not out to set records and spend tons of $$$. Looking at the Venom V500, local club (<font color="#00265e"> </font><font color="#00265e">http://classicthunder.org/</font>) mandates a<font size="2">Scorpion HK3026-1210</font> but those seemt to have been discontinued. Is somewhere around 2000kV going to be ok or should I be looking at the 3000 & 4000 kV motors? What is the ballance between kV&Cells run? Lower kV&More cells? Inrunner vs. Outrunner? All the new motors seem to be Outrunners. I have been told Inrunners REQUIRE water cooling where Outrunners don't (again, mixed signals as I have been told Outrunner require cooling as well, it's just more complicated.). In a closed space, I would tend to want to run cooling as I need to plumb it for the ESC as well, so which would be better? Does it matter? ESC: I have figured out the higher amps, the better and get one beyond what will be run (just to be safe and not burn it out). Like batteries, Any suggestions? Anything wrong with theHobby Wing "SeaKing" 60 or 90 Amp/Swordfish 120AmpESC or should I be looking at others for twice the price? OffshoreElectrics (<font color="#00265e"> </font><font color="#00265e">http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/index.php</font>) seems to have good prices and a good range of selections. Now, How do I match all of these together? http://images.rcuniverse.com/forum/image/s6.gif Currently looking at the following combination:<ul>[*]<span lang="EN">Leopard 3674 1700kv -2200kv</span>[*]<span lang="EN">Swordfish 120 ESC</span>[*]<span lang="EN">2 x <font size="2" face="Verdana">Turnigy 5000mah 2S 45~90C Lipo Pack</font></span>[/list]Thanks a load for all your help in advance. http://images.rcuniverse.com/forum/image/s2.gif |
RE: RE:
Well there is a lot of information to obtain and gather forums like offshoreelectrics.com are FULL of great information for just boating. That motor esc and something like a x440/3 prop should give you the results your looking for fast and inexpensive fun. Is that boat going to be a rocket no, but if setup properly it will run really nice with the given items you have listed. I think the 1900kv leopard 3674 may suit your needs and setup the best. I would change the swordfish out for a seaking 120 (the swordfish esc are very good, but require waterproofing to make more reliable) which is a little more smoother and better waterproofed from the factory. I would also add the programming card for that. The esc, motor and prop can be picked up at offshoreelectrics.com. Also check out kintecracing.com. You will need a water jacket for that. The Turnigy batteries are pretty good and a good value but shipping if not at the USA warehouse is very slow from china. Check out hobbypartz.com for some Gens ace lipos. They have some 2s 5300mah battereis that are awesome. As for chargers the more watts the better. Typical ac/dc chargers are 50w and for your batteries it will work just fine, as a new guy Iwould recommend something like a Hyperion eos0606i charger. It has some nice saftey features that would help a new guy out. Some of the cheaper chargers don't offer any good saftey features. Also the hyperion is a very nice charger and balances very well as well has a storage mode. I would read up on lipo batteries, they are amazing but require special care. Good luck with your project!

RE:
Thoughts on a 1300kv with the Seaking 90A ESC compared to the 1700kv with the 120A or 180A?
Again, not "racing" these hard, just for fun. Hobbyparz has a Tacon LBP3674-B/5D-1300KV for $45.00 USD and the Seaking 90A for $57.00 USD. |
RE: RE:
The Scorpion motor you asked about is still available. Using a 2000 Kv motor will pull around 80-90 amps with an m445 prop on 4S limiting run time.

RE:
Ordered the Leopard 3674 1900kv & Seaking 180A (offshore doesnt cary the 120) along with a programming card, cooling jacket, & motor mount yesterday. Now I can get dimensions and design them into the plans. Just need battery(s) and charger.
Wondering how many water pickups I will need on this as the ESC, motor, and motor mount all have cooling. Thinking 1 on the rudder and 1 on the skidfin. 71 Pay'N Pak Hydro @ 1/10 scale reduced & modified from the Roger Newton plans. Looking at a Foam/Ply composite like this article (http://www.fastelectrics.net/composites.php). Yes, I know this is an outrigger, but center box for the hydro w/foam nose, sponsons, sides and Laminate over that... Also have the 1/12 Slo-Mo-Shun IV from Billings Boats that needs to be built but not sure how I want to build that yet. Finishing work it great but model has issues as a runner. Will keep you all up to date with a build log over the winter. |
RE: RE:
A single water pickup on the rudder is enough, some folks just get carried away with multiple pickups. Route the water from the pickup to the ESC, then to the motor mount and then to the motor. Very little heat is picked up from the ESC, but put the coolest water to it. As long as you have adequate water flow this will be ample.

Thanks to all of you for the fantastic advice. Now the pressure is on me to build the thing... :)

RE:
Battery question...
SkyLipo, BlueLipo, or Turnigy... All have 2S1P 40C 5000mAh for about the same price ($30 USD). Not outright performance, but for ease of use, etc... Anyone used these? |
