Choosing the best battery. I had 2 explode!

I have a boat with a water cooled brushless Leopard 5682 1360kv. Was running 4x 11.1v lipo 2200mah 35c in parallel then series to get 22.2v. Goes good for about the first 3 seconds. Had 2 of the batteries explode and the other 2 weren't far from exploding. Any recommendations on what I should be using?

The 35c rating. You should be running something higher like a 60-90c. Also, your prop might be too big. I'm not really knowledgeable in this area but those would be the two biggies that stick out.

Someone should come along here at any time and give you more info.

Thanks for your reply, the best I can find in New Zealand is 60c. Looks likeiI will have to get some of those. $200 each though.

$200? Have you tried Hobby King?

Thats pretty cool for searching for batteries. Reasonably cheap too.

I am testing boat with Turnigy nano-tech 6600mah 2S2P 65~130C Hardcase Lipo Pack (Borrowed from a friends car)
Tomorrow night to see if they can keep up. Will series 2 packs to get 15-16v and see how it goes. only $48.90 each at hobby king. 3 of these in series could be an economical way to do it.

Hard case is usually not the best way to go for boats. Most all experienced boaters use soft case packs.

Instead of damaging your friends batteries why don't you buy or borrow a watt meter .connect it up and see how many watts, volts, amps, your set-up is drawing no-load and under-load?:
As mentioned it may be over-propped drawing too many amps, the ESC,motor connectors may be faulty causing higher resistance and heat.
Is the ESC set-up properly? Even if it is , you really shouldn't be running Lixx packs down to low voltage cut-off on a regular basis. All that does is overheat ,raise the internal resistance and puff the packs shortening their life/performance. Better to set a timer and come in before the packs reach low voltage.

...Goes good for about the first 3 seconds. Had 2 of the batteries explode and the other 2 weren't far from exploding...
This really doesn't make sense - unless there is a direct short the packs can't get hot enough to explode in 3 seconds of running. The OP needs to tell us more: exact boat and size, the ESC, the prop, how the packs are charged and exactly how the boat is run (time, throttle position, etc.). Some ESCs do not have programmable low voltage cutoffs so using a timer is a good suggestion.

I'am going to let someone else figure this out for you. The best batteries on the planet are from Mojo Racing Products called Giant Power. They are race proven and are showing a huge difference for all classes of racing, from boats to helie's. They come out of Detroit and are putting everyone using them on the podium. Good prices and the person selling them is very knowledgeable from his years of experience with electric rc's. Check out his web sight
