Old School N2 offshore mono

I built this boat back in 2001 I think. Its a BlewByYou ovalmaster offshore. 21 inch designed for 6-8 cells nimh.
I Overbuilt it with a very rare Neo magnet 05 brushed 13turn triple motor called a "lightning man neo" this motor held several world records in rc boats and cars.
It pulls big amps and had both water cooler brushes and can. The esc is a vintage RC hydros 6-12 nimh 60A continous 300A surge.
I was running back in the day 6 or 7 cell nimh on x435 2 blad or x435 three blade for fun. It can swing up to a x437 no problem.
Now its running 2s lipo 5000mah 50C gens ace hardcae battery with a low voltage led readout and buzzer alarm.
I need to make a new bushing in the strut as it has some play now but it still runs stupid fast. The lake was windy parallel to the beach on this day.

So the real question is?

Nice videos, I wanted one of those motors back then, the word was those was the fastest brush 6 to 8 cell motor. Have you seen the leopard 2860 or the 2860 size motors perform, I don't think that motor would beat the 2860 size motors of a comparable kV. I can tell you from experience that the 2860 is some motor. I ran a Rio ep with the 5050kv on 2s spinning an octura m435 3 blade. The motor had the boat over powered I couldn't believe my eyes, well the power of that motor ring the 1/8 flex shaft in quick order.

Am I still reasonably fast?

I know a brushless would probably beat it :) I use a ntm propdrive 2836 outrunner in one of my jet drive boats. That little motor is monstrously torquey, It will shoot a stream of water out of my jetdrive at least 12ft + .

I figure it's still very fast considering its brushed., still a lot of fun to drive:) The LM motor is really torquey , it is tough to spin it by the prop. I have 3/16 435 3 blade I sleeved to fit ⅛, the holeshot is phenomenal.
5050kv with 2s I image would eventually cavitate? at 42625rpm under load?. The LM motors don't spin fast but you don't lose much rpm under load.
Still a really fun setup. I wish I had tried 3s but I need to make a new prop bushing first. The old bushing is worn and has some play. I imagine a new bushing will help the rpm a bit.

I would be curious to see that thing on 3s. I hope you get the bushing issue solve.

Yup 3 s should be fun. Making a new bushing is easy:)

Yes, of course. If you need, you could also try 100C one.

I thinking to use my two 2200 45 c 3s graphene batteries on parallel . Would only be slightly heavier than a 6 cell nimh pack. My boat was designed for 6-8 nimh so it should work well.

Patrick125 07-08-2017 04:16 PM

That 3s should make things interesting.

Here is an exceed shark on 2s, with a tacon 5050kv, and an octura m435 3blade.

RainClod 07-10-2017 01:58 PM

I got to say mine still looks alot faster.

Patrick125 07-10-2017 03:17 PM

In the region where I live the water slows down the boats a lot. Example I have read that people get 48 to 50 on GPS with a stock traxxas spartan on 6s. In my area a stock spartan will do around 35 on GPS. That the exceed shark 2 I saw somewhere does 30mph on 3s. Where I live 22 to 23mph is what you will get. I am just showing you the video of my run. You probably might remember the 05 modified car motors. I still have a trinity d5 14turn. The d5 will push the shark in the video to 15 to 16mph max with a decent 4200 nimh 6 cell pack. So for a better comparison that boat was doing 27mph and if I was using a typical setup like reedy ti or similar type 05 car motor on 6 good nimhs I would be getting around 15 or 16mph at best.

The props are highly efficient but the water cut the rpm by a lot with them high revving smaller motors, I had bigger much lower kv motors push bigger heavier boats to similar speeds on 2s.

Yup thats why I run a "custom hand made motor" It has rare earth neodymium iron boron magnets. It is a torque monster. Does not get very high rpm's but very little loss in rpms. They held world records in rc dragsters ,N1,N2 and saw racing at one point. Common race setup for 6cell mono was x438 or Y536. It is actually hard to turn the prop by hand. AT the nationals it would run neck in neck with brushless back in the day.

Patrick125 07-18-2017 06:41 PM

Something I would like to add, I have run brush motors in the past, 05 modified motors, d4, p94, d5, speed gems, I ran a plettenberg 290/30/4 at one time, 700bb 8.4, I was able to get GPS reading with some of the motors, running nicad cells. I also had a lehner basic 4200 back around 2002 which I ran on nicad, years later was able to run other size brushless motors on nimhs. And had GPS reading with nimhs and brushless. In my experience the brush was right there in speed to the brushless on nimhs cells. I have melted many 05 end bells on cheap nicads. Setups a little over 200 watts of input power melted 05 endbells. I have burn can 540 at far less input than 200 watts. Where the brushless shine is the ability to handle far more power than a brush motor would handle. So with the power of today's battery the brushless can run bigger props for a give kV and motor mass than the brush motor thereby being faster than the brush.

Example I can run a x438 with my 5050kv 2860 motor on 2s.

Got RPM 07-20-2017 02:15 PM

Differences in water chemistry, density etc can indeed affect speed, but I have never seen more than a few mph - certainly not 15 mph. Full-sized boats see the same, never a 30% difference. I have run on water in five different states and a dozen ponds too.

I set many SAW records with 05 motors, usually pulling between 400 and 1200 amps depending on the cell count. Never melted an endbell or burned up a motor, but then I seldom ran more than a minute or so. I won the last-ever APBA P Sport Hydro National Championship pulling an average of 750 amps for over two minutes with a single 05 motor on a gearbox. These were all with NiHM cells, the setups ran for years.

I raced Ed Hughey at a SAW in Huntsville some years ago, he ran geared brushed motors and I ran direct drive brushless. No contest, but Ed was very gratuitous, a real gentleman.

5050kV Run 3S is too hot for the motor and ESC might brunt out. I have been tried and it is almost brunt out and melt the solder.
