power cutting out

Hi, I got in to this hobby for my son and have many rc boats. I have a few voracity boats and one seems to be over heating and will only run for 40% of the battery life after 3 years. The ESC and motor are running hot. and when I open the canopy up the esc is blinking red. I was told that the cooling lines could be clogged so I blew them out with my compressor. Any one know what the problem is ... The boat ran fast and never heated up in the past.

Common reasons for overheating include:

- prop too big
- motor shot - overheated, bearing seized, shorted windings, rusted
- ESC timing set wrong
- excessive time spent at part throttle
- driveline friction - when was it last lubricated and with what?
- insufficient gap between drive dog and strut
- hot pond water - doesn’t cool as well as cold water

If the battery quits after just 40% then the battery is probably shot. LiPo packs should be stored at 50% charge and in cool conditions, otherwise they lose capacity. Plus, cheap packs especially only last so many charge/discharge cycles, they are expendable items. Higher quality packs perform better and last longer....but they cost more. Ditto for NiMH except they should be stored at lower voltage.
