Hi Guys.

I bought this Toy Hydro on e-bay, anf I kind of expected it to be a bit dull performance wise......
I tried it out, and ran 2 batt packs throug it, and decided to head home and try upgrade the motor or something.
It was sailing at a fast walking pace.......quite disapointing.

It only steers by throttle/thrust differential on the two props. When you turn, one engine turns off...and it looses even more speed ;)
6 cell pack and 2 x 380 motors


I have striped out the engines, and am currently installing a singe speed 500bb Race powered by a 8 cell pack that I had in an old V-hull speed boat.
Do you think this will make it run faster than stock ?


Maybe Ill install a speed 700bb Turbo Neodym later if it still performs bad. Ive got one of those lying around too.....just no hardware that fits it.

Thanks for all the pictures!

A few posts down, Novacat is trying the same thing on the other side of the world!

Only he has a straight propshaft and seperate rudder, instead if a steering outdrive.

My favourite solution would be a flexshaft and strut, to have more adjustment possibilities.

hehe...so Im not the only one with this idea :D

I dont think it will have super performance with the engine Im installing now........... I have lots of Kan-1050 8 cell packs that I want to try to use. This shpuld keep the weight down. But I also have some 2400 nicd 8 cell packs.

Cant wait to try it out :D


The plastic hull is quite heavy by itself compared to a "real" vacum formed hull.

My boat weighs about 2kg with motor, esc , rx and steering servo. Kan 1050 weighs 172g and the 2400 460g.

The Graupner Taifun with a speed 700 turbo and 12 cells weighs 2100g, so this one is quite a bit heavier ;)


Here are some pics of my cooling, and steering servo.
I have also cut out the air intake, and a little of the exhaust for some air cooling......I dont think there will come too much water in that way.....I hope :)

Hi Sonnich,

I'm not sure your waterpickup will get much water if the hull actually gets on the plane...

In my sons mini hydroplane the intake is in the left sponson, and the (sucking) outlet in the right one.

Also, if possible, take off the remains of the 380 propshafts with the fins, to reduce drag.

hmmmmm...........failure :D

When I take it above 1/3 throttle, the prop begins to suck air and cavitate.......then it looses even more speed.
Its only sails margenly faster than stock ;)

My prop is at the same height as the ones that where on it before the mod. The boat also sits the same depth and atitude as before.


I have tried it with 8 x 2400 , 8 x 1050, and 3 lipo cells :D
They all perform almos identicly.

There is alot of drag in the baot that has to be overcome before it can get up to speed.

I am going to seal the hull ALL the way around. There is actualy quite alot of water in the hull, outside the weater tight compartment........this is just dead weight beig hauled around.


Pompebled, you are right about the cooling. Only a few drops came out of the "exhaust"

Guess ill have to find a speed 700 drive :-)

There is heaps of room for batteries, and Im sure it can take the extra weight.......we will see :D

How convenient......the local hobby shop had a drive without motor (my motor in the plastic :) )

Wooohoooo :D

Now it planes on the water. Im satisfied with it now. The speed 700 loves 12 cells, and the boat scoots on nicely. I also tried it on 8 cells, and it is only a tad slower than with 12 cells. I think its because weight goes down with the 8 cells, its easier for it to perform better. But defenatly faster on 12 :D

I have a 11mb move of it, but nowhere to host it.

There is some water entering the hull, so now Ill patch it up, and re-paint it. I used silicone RTV in the seal when I re-joined the hull, so I think most of it is entering through the hatch and intake and prop shaft.

good video Sonnich, great to see the boats will plane, with a bit more tuning they might really start to move quick.

have you tried it with a metal prop yet? might be a slight gain there

Thanks guys. Its by no means blistering fast :D

The last two pases in the video are on 8 cells
The first are best with the 12 cell batt still charged.

Im using those cheap 6 cell chineese batteries that are included with the RTR sets.........they are kind of CRAP :-)

I have ordered some proper 3300 Nimh pack for it.

How can it be tuned further ?
A metal prop?
Same size as the one I have on now?
How do i tell if I need a small/larger more/less pitch prop ?

new batteries will help, so will moving any other weight you can forward will help, are you running the cells in series or parrallel ? series obviously will yield more power.

your prop angle might also be a tad steep and the prop too deep and could be robbing you of speed, metal props dont flex so you will gain a bit of power there, id go for about a 40 - 42mm prop, something like a prather 215 or 220 or x440 should be a good starting point

Also was just looking at your prop depth, it shouldn't be that far below the ride shoes, the center of the prop should be nearly level with the bottom of the ride shoes
