BlackJack conversion 2.0

Well this was a 3 month project that got 99% finished and then ripped back apart due to a power system change. The electrics start with a 12XL, Hextronic 20 volt 120 amp ESC (custom water cooled). A 30 cell Super Bec 5 volt out put provides the power(it's hidden under the carbon fiber radio tray). A Jr Z590 high torque steering servo cranks the rudder. A Jr DX3 Spektrum system provides the inputs. Two 3 racing fans are installed on the motor and esc for a little extra insurance. Note the dual independent water cooling systems feed by through hull gundert pickups and led out by bulkhead fittings with an OSE water jacket. The motors bolted to an OSE DR mount. The tunnel was double laminated with 2mm lexan and 1/32 birch layered in 2ton hold devcon. The stuffing tube was extended 2 inches. I laminated the transom with 1/32 birch to seal up all the holes from the factory setup. As you can see the outdrive system was replaced with an octura strudder sporting a skeg strut. I have chosen a 45mm carbon fiber prop to start testing with. I will be running 3 sets of custom packs build for me by www.Battlepack.com. 2 sets of 7 cell IB3600s and a set of 8 cell 3600s. I chose these cells for there reliability and great voltage. Not to mention they are the best built packs you can get. This boat was built almost entirely from www.offshoreelectrics.com. Right down to the hull. The service from both sites is excellent and shipping is always lightening fast. A pleasure to work with all the way.

are those cooling fins on the rear end of the motor?

they look strange.....

i bet youll never have to worry about overheating the esc anymore...looke like you got water, air, and fin cooling on it

great boat SJFE, cant wait to see it run....

how did you get the water cooling on that esc?

im going to be using a plane esc that has no cooling and kind of want it water cooled.

I cheated a bit and ordered the Castle cooling plaes from Fullers. I am making my own for the brushless fighter. That is an Integy heatsink for 05 car motors. I took the fan brackets off, reversed them, put 45 degree angles @ the end to pitch the air flow down on the end bell. I over build and cool everything. I've broke and burned up to much good stuff.

I got some tests in today. I over looked a slight drive missalinment. The affects where quite severe. I will fix it this weekend.

how do you think the electric set up compares to the original motor that was in your boat ?

RE: BlackJack conversion 2.0

I really can't say. I pulled it out of the box and gutted it. Never even attempted to start it.

looks good now
were you using the 45mm prop in the vid ??

RE: BlackJack conversion 2.0

yes it does look good !.
perhaps the hooking is because your turn fin is not angled correctly.

RE: BlackJack conversion 2.0

Yes the fins where out quite a bit. I have been advised to loose the fins and prop down. Tonight I am ajusting the strudder a bit right. It's a tick off center. I will be testing again tomorrow.

I got a good run out of it today. It's ocillating a bit and you have to be ginger with the rudder or it will spin out. I did't have much time to run today. I will get a better test this comming week.

nice run, the boat sounded like you still can play around with a bigger prop, you will try 50mm prop later?

RE: BlackJack conversion 2.0

nice run, its going really well, and if you are getting 5 mins out of it then you could possibly prop up.. i wouldnt go to a to a 50mm, but maybe the same size with more pitch

Thanks guys. I will be moving up from the 40mm to a 42 this weekend. Then on to the 45 if all goes well with temps and torque. I am on the fence about removing the skeg from the strut. I think it's causing the twitchyness in the turns. The line between a smooth ark and a spinout is paper thin. It's a risky move to grind it off with ose down untill the 2nd. It would put me out of the water.

I don't have experience with cats (just monos) so this may be all wrong...but it seems that your turn fins should be angled out a bit more instead of straight vertical. I know it's not a V hull and it can't lean into a turn like a V can but it would seem to make sense that there would be some lean. Just a thought.

There is a definite logic in your sugestion. I am going to tune further with out the fins. If I feel the need to reinstall them I will give that a shot.
Thanks;)

take them off for a couple runs to see what it is like.
i have no fins on my cats at all. and they run very well with out them

RE: BlackJack conversion 2.0

The run posted in the last video is with out the fins. I am going to continue testing with out them. I have a feeling they there a crutch for that steerable outdrive.
