Making a 36" Cat
Hey
Because i have looked and i can't find any nice looking 34-36 " Cats out there, I thought i would make my own. Right now I have alot of things taken care of, and i have already made a scale 36" drawing. I have some questions thoguh. How big are the rear steps on the back of the Drifter L cats, because it does not look so great with the huge steps. and where should i put the hull steps and how many? I will post pics of the drawing later. Also for some ideas for the Designing, Could someone give me the link to those dutch plans for a cat on Xtremercboats, Like e-mail them to me at [email protected]. I think I will use Corel Draw to Create the plans on the comp, and does anyone have a tutorial for making plans on Corel Draw Graphics Suite X3? Thanks so much Dan |
RE: Making a 36" Cat
there should be two steps...
on my drifter, they are about 7 4/5" long from the transom of one step to the transom of another.... also, just something else to help you out, the best CoG for a drifter L is about 210mm from the transom (not the overhanging area, but from the transom of the last step, where the struts should be... |
RE: Making a 36" Cat
why 2 step? why not 1 or 3 or 4
every boat is different you cant compare two boats that are totally different. The drifter L is a bad handling hull so i would not copy that. it is very lose int he turns and wobbles quite a bit. build your own. your boat boat doesn't need steps. not all boats do. |
RE: Making a 36" Cat
you might also want to make this boat wider...like taylor said, they are lose in the turns, they are really only good for straits...i think giving the sponsons a sharper angle will also make it sink into the water a bit more giving it better grip...the riding surface of the sponsons on my drifter is almost flat...

Ok, Thanks.
Ill look on the internet and now i am debateing if i should spend the xtra mony and make my own cat instead of making a rigger. Could someone tell me what kind of boat is more fun to drive? I will most likely be taking this boat to Iowa and running it on the mossuri river (usually less than 6 inch chop) so ya. i think i may spend the xtra monie. thanks Dan |
RE: Making a 36" Cat
on that chop...a cat or vee is what youll probably want.

If you can find one the Toysport Jolly Cat is a fine hull. Light, strong and about the dimetions you are looking for. The MARITIMO UIM and Supet Cat M-1 are also nice and about the size.

ok thanks, i have been getting quite good information on rum runners. Does anyone know what is a good, affordable CAD program so i can make plans? Currently i am drawing them up, on a huge 1.5x1.5 sheet of paper.
Thanks Dan |
RE: Making a 36" Cat
if you are making one boat then don't worry about doing a cad . it is so much more time consuming.
Do it on paper and then cut it out on wood that way. easy and simple well and you can make it to what you want. |
