FDM32 Brushless Mono Thread
1 Attachment(s)
I got my parts ordered this thread is now a test! please go the the bottom to see what I got coming! :D
Yo. I got a fine design mono. Nice boat. I wanna run direct drive with a flex cable. I am setup to run 16 to 20 cells.. I was wondering which feiago XL motor would be best, or would give me the best top speed. Some have reccomended a 10XL, but others say 12xl. I want speed. Not Concerned with run time. The gear drive is not in the boat anymore and is NOT going to be used. THANKS! |
RE: 32" Mono 16-20 cell Motor Rec's
a feigao XL motor would be the way to go
if you continue to run 16 cells, a 10XL will work great, but if you decide to try 20 cells, i would go 12XL....the 10XL on 24volts will be getting around 40,000rpms, and wont be able to turn a large prop without overheating badly....since you will be running so many cells, i would be looking more at torque and not rpm....an 11XL should be good if you would not want to change out motors if you decide to run more cells, but you will be using a larger prop in 16 cells, and a somewhat small one on 20 cells... |
RE: 32" Mono 16-20 cell Motor Rec's
oh, and nice boat by the way...those FDM 32" monos are hard to find now...i cant find them on the website, so im guessing they arent made anymore, but ive heard they were good performing hulls if i recall correctly...

RE: 32" Mono 16-20 cell Motor Rec's
Wook....Thanks, thats something to think about. I would like to be able to run the same prop and motor on 16 and 20 cells.
If I had to change prop to go to 20 cells that would be ok, but I do not wanna change motors. I would like to use one motor only. Thanks again. |
RE: 32" Mono 16-20 cell Motor Rec's
Yeah, Thanks. everyone who see's it loves it. I have been told they are no longer in production. Taylor shaw said something about wanting to find one too. LOL.
It handles GREAT at the top speed of 25MPH that I have had it at.......But I have never had a chance to push it. Thats what the Feiago XL is for ;) |
RE: 32" Mono 16-20 cell Motor Rec's
Speaking of taylor I see him reading the thread! I sure wish he would chime in and call everyone's BS and tell me what motor to buy!!!! :):):) Just jokin....

RE: 32" Mono 16-20 cell Motor Rec's
well alright then
I do like the looks of the hull. it is a very nice pre 1990's off shore cigarette. looks pretty much identical to them. that and it has a nice deep hull to throw what ever kind of power you have. Being the size it is and being ABS would make it quite light. You should have no problem with a 9XL and just prop it down it has a wide body and not to much down force, so once on plane the front half of the boat will be like its not even there. Be sure to water cool it with a jacket. if you are looking for a different motor. that will get you better life then check out the NEU 1515 or the lehner 2260-2280 the neu is the same size as a XL just a bit longer as well as the lehner. |
RE: 32" Mono 16-20 cell Motor Rec's
Thanks taylor. How many cells can a 9xl handle? Again, to reiterate...I will NOT be using a gear box. Flex cable.
If I find it runs to hot, I can always throw on a smaller prop right? Figure with that motor I should start with a P215...Maybe a 220?...I also have a x447, and a X440 3 blade, a carbon props from 35mm to 55mm. So I would think I should be able to find something in my arsenal that would work. Got a link to a solid shop to buy the NEU and lehner motors? I don't think I want one cause of the cost, but I should take a look. |
RE: 32" Mono 16-20 cell Motor Rec's
you 9XL can handel 20 cells.
prop for 20 cells would be maybe a X440 or X640. on 12 cells you can run a 642 with out a problem. i'm not sure of a good solid place to buy from i get some of my stuff from FDM but for some reason they are going down hill. so its not solid. |
RE: 32" Mono 16-20 cell Motor Rec's
yup you can run a 9xl but youll need a freeking pump to get wnought water to cool it. make sure you have good water cooling on 20 cells
|
RE: 32" Mono 16-20 cell Motor Rec's
Thanks. To start I am going to stay on a Feiago 9xl and 16 cells. Once I get a setup dialed on 16 cells, i'll mess with 20 and see if I can keep the magic smoke in. ;)

RE: 32" Mono 16-20 cell Motor Rec's
OK guys, I just placed a order with UH.com.
I got a Feiago 9xl motor, a Feiago 540 water cooling jacket, and some 4mm bullitt connectors. I'm in business. https://www.unitedhobbies.com/UNITED...idProduct=4887 https://www.unitedhobbies.com/UNITED...idProduct=4880 |
RE: 32" Mono 16-20 cell Motor Rec's
I ordered what I needed as far as flex shafts and collet's from OSE.com. Everything I need to make my FDM32 mono fly is on the way!!!!!
I also just ordered some cells. I got some matched GP3700's coming also. I am gonna set myself up so I can run 6, 8, 12, 14, 16, and 18 cells. As soon as my parts come, I am gonna be on top of this. First test run is gonna be the 9xl on 14 cells and a 35MM carbon prop. I used FEcalc to get some prop rec's. I don't remember which ones it told me to try, but they where all the smallest 3/16 props available when I calculated using 18 cells! We'll see, this oughta be fun! If I cannot get any speed from this motor for some reason....I am gonna try the Quannum XL 1000kv motor on 18 cells and see what it does. |
RE: 32" Mono 16-20 cell Motor Rec's
I find FEcalc tends to over estimate speed and current draw.

RE: FDM32 Brushless Mono Thread
just don't let the prop and flex cable fall off and it will be fine.

RE: FDM32 Brushless Mono Thread
I find FEcalc tends to over estimate speed and current draw. I agree with this statement completely. Not even static load is as high as some of the figures I see on fecal when tested with a data logging device. Some posted a video of a jet stream with a quannum and 16 GP 3700 cells, turning a 440 or 440 3 blade and the amp draw was between 24 and 25 amps. The 9xl will draw alot more current than that with the same amount of cells given the same cell type is used and it will be alot faster to.

RE: FDM32 Brushless Mono Thread
...just a thought here;
I know you didn't ask, but... you might gain some performance (speed and handling) by moving the trims/turn fins further away from the strut...like all the way out. My understanding is that they can cause cavitation when that close, and it looks as though they are close enough to the keel line that they might disturb the flow to the prop. gorgeous boat BTW. |
RE: FDM32 Brushless Mono Thread
Thanks guys. Yeah I was kinda wondering about FE calc. It seemed to have some pretty high numbers. Well, I was watching a movie with my girlfriend here and decided I could work a prop over during. So I did up the 215 I got.
I am going to start with 16 cells and a 35MM carbon prop I think. Then check temps and speeds.......MsDarla....Don't think you ar'nt gonna be around. I'm gonna need to use your GPS to see how many MPH faster my FDM hull is then your titan ;) |
RE: FDM32 Brushless Mono Thread
Jim,His wife and I went to the Memphis boat race meet for a few hours.
Sunday they race which you should see. ;) I have a CC Hydra 120 for my Titan 29 and also one for Al's TC31. :D So far its alot better. |
RE: FDM32 Brushless Mono Thread
Thanks anyway darla, I had some other plans going on. I forgot you called too [:o] Sorry. FE_chris has a short term memory about as long as a Mini-V :)
Those sound like nice ESC's but they are out of my price range for sure. I can't be buying 200$ ESC's when I can place an entire order at UH.com and get a ESC, batteries and everything else I need for less...... But on that same note, we will see. I have not ran this Hextronic 120amp ESC hard at all. So time will tell if it stands up. |

Got my stuff!!!! :D
The motor mount is installed, I have 2 matched nine cell packs built, ESC is wired, Flex cable need to be assembled and cut. First runs are gonna be with 16 and 18 cells and a Quannum 1000KV BL motor. I am sure it's gonna be atleast a week for my feiago gets here. it has not even left UH.com yet. These GP3700 cells look pretty nice for the coin. brand new just like the seller said. We'll see. I'm thinking I should try a X447 prop with this setup but not sure............ So here it is........ |
RE: FDM32 Brushless Mono Thread
Now its getting there. [sm=what_smile.gif]
Al's brushless TC31 might be done about the same time as yours. ;) |
RE: FDM32 Brushless Mono Thread
Thats 18 cells of raw power there darla [8D]
yeah, we are gonna have to hang out together. That brushless TC31 is right up my alley. What motor did al chose to run? How many cells? |
