Brushless Top Speed 2

Well I couldn't resist. I had a spare SuperVee motor and ESC just sitting collecting dust. I have always been fascinated buy tunnel hull boats so I got a Top Speed 2. At $90.00 it is $20.00 cheaper than the bare SuperVee hull and comes with all the hardware and a real nice stand. I also bought a complete carbon fiber lower with electric motor mounting kit and drive adaptor. It kinda hurt to cut up my new boat to mount the new radio-battery box I built after arranging the components to keep the balance point at 9 1/2in from the stern. The motor cover is from an Aquacraft EP1 and I fabricated lower cover to make it more to scale and route the cooling pipes. The motor and the ESC are water-cooled. It took about 20 hours to complete the project and I'm very pleased with results. I live in a summer vacation area where electric power makes the neighbors smile. I don't have a GPS but my new Brushless Top Speed 2 is faster than our SuperVees and is rock solid at top speed where the SuperVees are on the edge. Oh, and I found out one more thing, SuperVees can't turn. Enjoy[8D]

Looks good

where did you get the lower leg and how much ??

I have a prather lap cat with a 7.5 K/B that I would like to try elecrtic but I do not
want to cut up the K/B leg ( in case it did not work out)

Very cool project and looks great and I bet it runs great. A video would be very nice.
That last picture does not exactly show a rock solid run;)

Thanks, by the time I got to take some pics it was getting late and water skiers had messed up the lake. I'll try to get some better pics.

Looks great. What prop are you using? If it can run that fast in those conditions without flipping that's very impressive. Also it would be interesting to know how that motor stands up to getting wet. I've heard that brushless motors are not ideal for outboards as they are not good with water.

I tried a X440-3, X442 and it seemed to go best on a M445. I had to grind a few thousands of an inch of the cavatation plate to allow clearance for the M445. I have the motor cover sealed up and so far the motor has stayed dry. The boat rides on the last 1/3 of the hull the way I have it trimmed now. I want to try different trims to see how it changes things. Before I started this project I read everything I could find on the TS2 and my boat doesn't seem to suffer from the bouncing the nito powered owners talk about. Maybe the extra weight of the batteries settles it down. A real brushless motor and speed control would make this boat just fly.:D

Another Brushless Top Speed 2!!!!

EXCELLENT!

I've only seen and drove nitro TS 2's. Make certain you have installed the recovery pads included in the kit. A stock nitro TS2 with an O.S. outboard will exceed 40mph and at that speed it handles very well!

Some of the nitro guys end up adding lead weight in the nose to balance the boat or to decrease the bouncing. Weight of the batteries must help!

When set up for high speed, only the last 1-3 inches of the hull will be in the water at all times. I would consider one third of the hull running in the water to be riding extremely wet.

Ryan, in the manual it said to install the recovery pads if the boat was hooking in the corners. My boat will only hook if you make it by turning extremely sharp and let off the throttle so I left them off. Are the nitro guys putting them on anyways? I have not added any lead weights to the nose. I ran the boat again last night and looked more carefully at how the boat was sitting. My eyes aren't as good as they once were but it does seem to be running on the last 2-3in of hull at top speed. The boat seems to be floating or skiddering across the water with a very fine spray comming of the rear corners of the hull. I also had one blow over running on flat water with no wind and I don't no why. My son had his SuperVee out last night and the TS2 has a healthy top speed advantage over it. We are running the same M445 props and 2s2p E-Moli batteries. The SuperVee was runnig as dry as you can get it and still have some control. I don't have a GPS but I would say he was going mid 30s for sure and the TS2 was atleast 5mph faster. I just can't get over the way the TS2 turns compared to the mono.

RE: Brushless Top Speed 2

I have told a few people where I run to install the pads anyways, It's always the first question I ask. A Tunnel typically drops the nose in turns to allow for a much tighter turn. (You will hear the hull grabbing the water while turning at higher speeds) When running with other boats, any wake can grab the hull while turning and cause hooking.

If you don't believe it will help you with your driving style, don't install them. You can always install them later.
Your LiPo's make up for the lead weights. As long as your CofG is correct, no extra weight will be needed.

I would also recommend picking up a GPS. I ended up picking up a Garmin Geko 201 for 79.99 Canadian as it was discontinued at the time. I find a GPS to be very useful when comparing speed and modifications. I've had my Geko in everything from an R/C car to an R/C plane. It can also be used for many various outdoor activites.

For around $90, the TS2 it is an absolute excellent deal. I find Tunnels to be very easy to setup compared to Mono's. As with all hulls, fine tuning them to the way you prefer is the only challenge. Eventually you must post video, you know that right?

Thanks Ryan, I will try the recovery pads. Any idea how close to the bow to put them? I have a video camera so this weekend, weather permitting, I will see if my son will help me get some footage and figure out how to get it on Photobucket.

A couple more pics.

Most people install them as far forward as possible using double sided tape. (temporary if you don't like it) There should be a photo in the instuction manual to give you a clear picture of how to install them. If I remember correctly around page 14 or 15.

If photobucket doesn't work out, I'd give youtube a try. Much more user friendly when uploading and viewing videos.

EDIT: By the way, it looks great in the water!

RE: Brushless Top Speed 2

I tried the recovery pads and they do make a difference. The bow rides higher in the corners and I don't see any negative effects. I will leave them on for a while to test in different conditions. Also I noticed that the SuperVee motor doesn't have that high-pitched wine (actually very quiet) in the outboard that is has in the SuperVee. I also had my doubts about the water pickup in the cavitation plate as it is relying on prop wash to get its water but it works very well. As soon as the prop starts to turn water comes out the outlet and the boat hasn’t even planned off yet. Still learning.[8D]

Aquacraft needs to build and sell these themselves. I would put myself into debt getting one :D

Very, Very, VERY nice boat man.

Thanks FE_Chris, I have to agree. It almost looks real. I still can't get over how it handles compared to my SuperVee.:D

Waiting for calm water. Can't win as soon as the wind goes down the water skiers come out.:(

I prefer to have the recovery pads on, with a mod nitro engine I find they must be installed. Water pickups behind the prop always work much better, if it's possible that would be the way I would water cool any boat.

My SV motor is quite loud in my scratch built cat. I wonder why the noise is reduced with an outboard. Maybe it's such a small compartment and does not allow the sound to amplify.

I think that would be exactly why. Its like a noise cancelling chamber.

I have suggested this several times, even e-mailing aquacraft. They have never responded to these suggestion. Take that to mean what you will.

I was wondering if the noise was comming from the motor bearings. In the SuperVee all the prop thrust is carried by the motor bearings. On the outboard the thrust is carried by a thrust bearing between the drive dog and the lower leg protecting the motor bearings from side load. The motor cover does cancel out a lot of the noise because it is hard to hear the beeps when you arm ESC.
