New Rigger setup
 

Just finalized the deal with Doubledog for his Graupner Silver Bullet rigger. So heres where I am on this little side project, waiting for the boat to come in will have set of hardware, an hull along with a Lehner basic 5300 brushless motor specs as follows ;
Basic 5300 700 Watts @ 55 Amps 5300kv 145g
Looking at ETTI ESC's either do the 70 or step up to 120A for a future motor upgrade; opinions? will the 70 be enough
its Kv seems pretty excessive so I'll probably start with X427 an go up from there
batteries figure a 2s1p 30c 3000mah lipo

Am I in the ballpark with my ideas any suggestions on prop an battery??????
I like the flightpower EVO25-2170 2S 7.4V 25C 54A CONTINUOUS, 50C 108 AMP BURSTS but is it too much for esc/motor?

I'd like to be able to use same batteries in my skunk works cat thatll have a NEU 1515 1y an ETTI 120A so if I buy a couple of batteries I could use one in the rigger an have 2 setup in the cat.
Suggestions? Once I get permission from Doubledog I'll post the pics of the rigger up in here, just dont want to snag them from his profile w/o asking first.

your setup sounds just about perfect. The KV range and that motor are very well suited for that boat.

If you can afford the 120. . do it

yeah, I was getting ready to order one for the Skunkworks so I'll just order 2. How about those flightpower lipos? They are 2170mah but the C an burst ratings are pretty high not looking for run times of exceedingly long time but want max punch.
Have you had any expeirance with that hull Taylor?
Hows it run anything I should do right off the bat in adjustments or mods? I figure I'll give it to my paint guy after I play with it first;) an probably do a angry bull airbrushed on the main body, thought it would be pretty cool if I could run the water oulets to the nose of the hull for spouts out the "nostril" of the bull. Maybe...:) well see when I get her in.

also what sized can is that? I was thinking of doing one of the CF water cooling sleeves from etti also. Man theyll get some money from me 2 120A esc's, 2 water jackets, a coupler an if they sold batteries Then thered be 4 of those! I think four lipos will give me some good running time at the pond with those two boats huh [8D][8D]

I have no had personally any experience with the boat. But i can tell you it is a very very good little rigger.

as for adjustments I'm not to sure like i said before I don't own one.
when u have the boat check all the measurements to make sure the pack will fit in the hull. 2170 Mah should be good, but a bit more like 4000 would be better

I thought that also so maybe I should check out some other battery sites because the 2s1p 2175 I told you about above is 119 grams an 51 US dollars (its also in the UK so I know not shipping) but their other packs just seem too heavy an have too high a burst rate for this application I think here I'll list them an you can give opinions;

with these types of burst capabilites Id fry my esc right? or would the esc just not draw that much power, only whats needed?

If those options wouldnt work, were do you get your lipos from show me some sites peoples!! Any discount rates if I buy 4 or maybe I step up to 6 who out there would give the nicest batteries an maybe if I buy multiples I'd get a discount.


dang! I was hoping to order them before the end of the year you know (company expense) I hate being made to wait[:@]. Ahh well to prevent another diaster with ordering, like my recent fiasco with those whom shall not be named I guess most of this will have to go on next years taxes:D

no it wouldnt fry the esc, burst means how many amps it can put out (for a limited time) if that many are being drawn. continuous draw is how many amps can be drawn from the battery safely. it wont randomly put out that many unless the motor demands that much power.

well I had added the batteries an esc Im interested in to my FE calc an gave a warning on the higher draw lipos. Thats good to know though then the higher mah batteries would be good thing but how about the weight some of those get awfully beefy

Thought I would update this with some picks of the lil boat I have courtesy of DoubleDog. The boat in in transit an should recieve intime for some weekend running next weekend. Ordered (2, for this an the Skunk cat) ETTI 125A Brushless ESCan water jackets going to ditch that coil cooler you see on it, an am waiting for some dimensions to order the batteries but will probably end up with the EVO25-3700mah 2S 7.4V 25C 92.5A lipos (bought 4) an am going to order some props to fit her up with like a x427 an a few up from that. Will get them raw an balance an sharpen myself, its pretty easy to do since I have a high speed bur balancer for my jewelry making, it can help me make those blades PERFECTLY balanced up to 60K [X(] that way Im sure its true an straight an running hard. will have video an pics by next week!:D

I was looking at that over in the marketplace. I looked for some info on it elsewhare and couldn't find anything. Do they still make these? What do/did they run new? Is it actually fiberglass or does it have a fiberglass lining to add strength?

The Graupner is a fully fiberglass hull, there were some chinese knock offs made in plastic but came new in box brittle an cracked easily to my knowledge they are no longer in production but a few websites in europe advertise them as still being sold, bare hull Ive found online going for around $100 used an a few sites that had them listed new for $150.
This one is supposedly a true graupner an DD has a good reputation on these forums so I believe it. Ive done some research on this boat an am excited to get her running, just exactly what I was looking for a little rigger to play with for a resonable cost. Since I had pretty much everything to set her up it works for me!

UPDATE
Recieved the hull this morning, will have better detailed pics of hull later. Right now I removed the rudder, motor mount was unattached. Will pull hardware off later today also. Going to paint guy today, good airbrush paint job for show. Heres some pics of the before, will post pics of the after on each part as I enhance;).
Should be fun.

Turn fin gets the same treatment. Ive decided to keep the rudder mtg an strut in place for now an remove tonight before it goes to paint guy.
I'd like some input on the turn fin, it seems excessively large for this application. But I have heard that a deeper on is needed on riggers? Yes no?
Would it be a good idea to shape it a little more streamlined?
like the example on the third pic.

thats a great hull thats for sure!!.
but you just ruined everything with your polishing and rounding it dude!!
round curves and soft lines are like the WORST thing you can do that a boat, causes major drag
i'd get that file out and sharpen everything or you will have a sad running boat.
as for being "too steep" i don't know what thats about. the best rudders are wedge rudders. a knife blade rudder isnt even as good. and i have run a knife blade rudder, I made it out of a Hankel's fillet knife, i used that and then replaced it with the exact Fullers mini rudder you have and its made a WORLD of difference
and leave the turn fin like that dude, you only round it, if its on a mono becuse when the water hits it the boat is on a angle so it doesn't give so much suction.

that grapuner hull ( got it drom DR jet ?) is a great boat.

But to clarify, again, I Edged EVERYTHING after polishing the main surfaces. The leading edge was wobbly from a quick sharpening from pervious owner, basically I polished then squared an sharpened all. I dont think Ill have any adverse running characteristics an only made a good thing better!

here is maybe a better shot. If you have a reason for not polishing,maybe a satin finish, do chime in. But in regards to making things rounded, it can happen to someone unsure of polishing but Ive been doing it for years, an I know my metals!;) Put a shine on and an edge that will cut you if your not careful.

i'm not talking about the front of the rudder. i should hope you know to sharpen that part.
Look at the back where it is the flat spot the back, you have the leading edge, then you have two more at the back, I see from the picture that that is soft and round. from what i can tell, but that should be sharp.

I was fairly certain that all edges were square an sharp but since you pointed them out, I went back over them an checked. Nicely square an sharp on all edges. a few passes with the hone stick confirmed it everything is as it should be; square, sharp an highly polished;). Thanks though for your concern! An appreciate everyones advice an knowledge so far.

update: Paint
With my paint guy doing two large landscape paintings for me (more likely HUGE is the correct term 6' by 3.5') An I just gave him my skunk works cat to do a wicked airbrush set up. That leaves him with very little time to paint this little rigger, an I so want to run this sooner than later ;). I decided to do the paint myself with a little airbrush kit I had laying around. Going to be pretty simple; dupont paints, a silver mettalic flake base, red mettalic an artic white flake. All an all its turning out good. Have base coat on it now an when I get home I'll start with the lines an graphics. Hope the steady hand holds out:)!

heres the mock up I was thinking of doing, turns out I can paint pretty well but using paintshop on the computer with a touchpad laptop, I SUCK! :eek:
But heres the general idea of what Im going to do. Might change a little as I start to tape things off tonight. who knows. Let me know what you think. The dark red on paint sho doesnt do the actual color justice.

Wanted to paint the stand also so I shot it with the red so you all can see the true color. Im really liking how the red turned out. Thats only one coat over the plain creme plastic! Its a candy red so the base color will play with the color tones an give a bit more sparkle once I have a few coats an clear on the hull.
So far Im happy an cant wait for the finishing touches![8D][8D]

UPDATE 2.0
Well its taken me a little longer to finish the paint job because I ended up going overboard [X(]
I decided to do a paint job barely in my level of skill but figured hey, itll go so fast no one will see any blemishes ;) it actually turned out really good excapt when I got to the end (Im copyrighting my last statement seems how that always is with me)
Ill post the layup procedure I used then Ill post the finished picks tomorrow after I buff it out, dont worry I plan on blueprinting the hull to take out any rounding done by painting an not going to wax the running surface, only wet sand that.
