need ESC & motor

hi..im building a boat and trying to figure out which parts i should use...looking for suggestions...
i plan on using a 6volt SLA 10 or 12Ah battery....and im thinking the motor should be a speed 600 brushed.
it doesn't have to be super fast, but not a turtle slow either....decent speed id guess. 10 to 20mph would be nice.

here's the thing, my budget is less then $20 for the motor and less then $30 for ESC, would also like to have reverse.
the boat will be using a single propeller & rudder system...very basic.

here is a photo of the hull i should be using. it's about 29" long & 11" wide

how big is the boat
on 6 volts your will be slow with a speed 600

the boat is 29" long & 11" wide....when you say slow, how slow you reckon?

more like 10mph

RE: need ESC & motor

well if i wanted 15mph-20mph could i not get that speed with a 6 volt SLA ?

RE: need ESC & motor

It will be hard to even get 10mph with all that weight. A typical speed 600 motor with 8 cells (9.6v) running in a FE hull would run about 20-25mph.

Using more power will only cut down on your run time. In this case I believe slower is better than less run time.

well run time is more important to me then speed...but if i could get it to 10mph, that would be fine i guess.

im thinking [link=http://www.advantagehobby.com/product.php?productid=25185&cat=365&page=1]this waterproof ESC[/link]would work but not sure on the motor.

RE: need ESC & motor

That would work with most brushed motors. I've ran a 700 motor on 6 cells with that esc in the past.

im wondering what kind of speed i should expect with an 500-600 15+ turn motor...and the 6 volt SLA

You will only find out after trying. I don't believe you will see over 10mph but there are many variables to consider.

Well...considering this pop bottle (which looks pretty quick actually) is going 7mph, I doubt you'll see 10mph.

Is the battery the same as the Dumas 2 1/2lb battery on the Tower website? If so, that's quite a lot of weight to have for only 6 volts.

RE: need ESC & motor

wow that looks so much faster then 7mph.....if my boat went that fast id be more then happy.

the 6 volt SLA battery is something like [link=http://www.ragebattery.com/batterystore/SLA-10-6.html]this one[/link]. it weighs like 4 lbs lol i need a lot of battery life.

alright looks like ive picked the motor now,

so, that pro boat waterproof ESC w/ reverse and an graupner speed 600 eco 7.2v motor.

Let us know how it goes.

it might be awhile before i begin the build....but will keep you guys posted.

know any good online stores that carry 3 blade propellers? i think im going to get one in the 30 to 40mm range.

RE: need ESC & motor

Offshoreelectrics.com may carry a few 3 bladers in that range. You may find yourself using something larger if only 6v is used.

i was thinking the motor over again, and i was wondering....because that particular model graupner is hard to find in the states...for some reason im not sure. i wonder if i could find another motor/brand that is equivalent in specs & size. low RPM, low current drain, etc.

id think those RPM's and amps are a bit high....dontcha think..

ryan_t888 06-11-2008 12:33 PM

RE: need ESC & motor

If you look at the 8.4v motor they list 9100 RPM loaded. This is rated running 9.6v. Running only 6v will be about 5500RPM. I believe this is about where you would like to be.

Current in amps is not critical at all. The motor will draw as many amps as it wants depending on what prop you toss at it. A smaller prop decreases current draw a larger prop increases draw.

RE: need ESC & motor

why don't they state how many turns they are...

ryan_t888 06-11-2008 01:17 PM

RE: need ESC & motor

The number of turns on any given motor does not tell you anything about it.
