Stretch NQD Rigger project
 

This is my “stretch� NQD Rigger I just finished converting. Haven’t had a chance to put it into water yet (been cooold forever, it seems). Got the NDQ Arrow Wind on ebay for about $40 (delivered) and after removing all the original (non proportional, one speed) innards and a lot of internal plastic, I moved the sponsons forward about 2� to make room for a 3s 2800ma Lipo and a Seaking 60A ESC, which just do fit now. After reasealing the hull/deck with silicone caulking, I superglued the outside seams (including the sponsons seams) several times until completely sealed. I also modded the canopy with a closure tab, doing away with the unsightly front screw (will still use tape on seams).

I used a 4mm flex shaft and strut from RC Boat Bitz and a 75mm length rudder. And I used the original brass stuffing box (with no liner) and filled it with Gorilla Snawt..It’s got a water jacketed HobbyWing 34x58 3600KV brushless motor (bought with the esc- package deal), which should work nicely. The 35x1.4 copper prop and spinner nut each needs balancing before use, so I’ll use Turnigy plastic props until I find which size works best. I know I should have waited on the metal prop, but wanted one for pics (?]> so got one that was in the slightly large range (per earlier trials by DirtySouth). But it still may be too small for this powerplant – we’ll see.

This project was fun to do and I think looks nice – and the hull was cheap! And now I have enough parts (including radio!) left over to make a (PVC tubing?) rescue craft of some sorts (I know, I may need another rescue craft to rescue the rescue craft!). Ha!

Looks real "NEAT":D Don't expect too much from the Turnigy props. They are a great prop in the low rev range but up higher they throw the ears off[&o] We did 4 in one day when we were testing for prop size on a new boat and found that down low they were better than metal but up high they fell apart:D

Thanks for the info. Can you recommend a good plastic prop to use for higher RPM's? Maybe one of the carbon filled props.

HI. I can't give you a size but I have found that the black composite material ones hold up a lot better. I have used the brown and the strange yellow coloured ones from Octura and both of those have thrown ears off as well. The theoretical speed of the brushless was about 40,000. It was a small out runner of 5,000KV on 11.1 lipos. The motor at the moment is 3,900 KV with an alloy prop.

Yeah, Hobby Lobby lists both fiberglass and carbon reinforced black props in my shaft size (4mm) and 3/16. I wonder which would hold up longer. Buy and try, I suppose. Thx.

Looks really good sundogz. Did you file the rudder down a little? Can't tell if its paint or bright shiny from filling on trailing edge. Good pics too.

Judging by the picture, he has rounded the traling edge, that's not good and will create substantual drag, maybe even steering issues.

@sundogz: if you have 'meat' left, make the trailing edges sharp again, it'll gain speed and control.

Hi Jan, glad you and Damfurst noticed. I was put off by the width (too wide) of that inexpensive (internet purchase) wedge rudder, and considering that an elliptical shape has less drag coefficient than a wedge (water molecules recombine behind a wing shape but create a vacuum behind a wedge) and that racing sailboat keels are never wedge shaped – thought I’d try a ‘reverse wing’ shape. And since this boat was made with more of a SAW rigger in mind than a circuit racer, the rudder is fairly short (75mm) as well. We’ll see. I can change it later to a (thinner) wedge for comparison.

yes. One thing that is mentioned a lot is that you alway want sharp corners. Never rounded since water sends to adhere to the corners causing drag. Anyways, as you said give it a try and see what happens. I have one of these boats too and I'm thinking of putting an outrunner brushless (kv 3200) but haven't come around to it. Your boat is giving me a little motivation to get my done. I'll post if I do it. Let us know how yours flys. I predict a solid 40mph speed with possible 50's with better prop. I'll be running 11 volt too and will be using a metal octura prop (a cut 1735). It sounds big, but supposedly the outrunners have more torque than the in runners. I don't know but it'll be fun. Just remember to slow down in turn if you dont have a turn fin on that sponson.

Yes that prop may be fine - surface drives can use larger props. How will you cool the outrigger? That has always been a problem. Send pics when you get going. I will post results as soon as things warm up a bit.

If you want to separate the hull halves, get a drill bit the same size as the holes on the bottom and twirl out the wax with your fingers. It comes out easily. The front and rearmost holes are smaller than the others. I sealed them back with wax, but the vibration of the motor (with that unbalanced prop) vibrated one out. So I dug them out again and filled them with hot glue, and cut off the excess (after cooling) with a razor blade. Worked well.

I still have this boat (missing the esc) - I use it on my avatar photo. But I have not run it since rebuilding her, as it requires a large body of water, and I don't live near a lake or large enough pond. I've been focusing on jet drive boats ever since. I do plan to run it some time in the future and will post videos! I wouldn't be surprised if she runs in the 40's.

Finally got to try out the rigger this weekend at the lake and it did well. Here's a [link=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JvoBTntLHqM]video[/link]. I was using the 60A Seaking esc in another project and so it had larger connectors that I didn't want to mess with as I had limited time, so I put a 35A Seaking in it instead (I know...). Believe it or not, it did fine! Didn't run hot, long runtime on a 2500ma 35C. Could use a turn fin, had to make large turns as it wanted to drift. And the strut needs to be adjusted down a little as it hops a little at full throttle.

Tell me if this has ever happened to you: on the final run coming in to shore I abruptly stopped (but not brake) and the propnut and prop fell off! It made it to shore OK (lucky me). Did I cause this, or did it just work loose? A little coolity is the re/green led on the esc lights up the hull at dusk and looked way cool flashing when I changed throttle settings. This is a fun little boat.

Very cool! Thanks for posting the video. I put a 3600kv outrunner in mine, with a 2200 3s pack. I have the stock hardware on it though, but it goes pretty nice. I only run it for a few minutes at a time so it doesn't over heat. I bought this for use a recovery boat, but it's a lot of fun. Mine bounces around at full throttle too.
I really liked your idea of stretching it a couple of inches. Might try this soon.

But as I mentioned on the small bolt thread, I do own a NQDarrow wind too and I am planning on a rebuild for it soon.
How is your arrow running atm? and what motor did u use?

Hey, Nick - good to hear from you. It has been a while since I've run it, but need to soon to check out some improvements I've done. I made/installed a turn fin and replaced the rudder that I had rounded the front of. You'll have a blast with it. One important thing to do is to seal the transom seams with superglue. It will take several coats, but they will serve as flotation when sealed up. And it will float nose up fully loaded if something happens (I can attest to that).

is the boat alllll the way at the top have stock servo?

i dont have a boat yet, but i am looking into getting one of these, will put 3000kv brushless in it with 3s lipo and 45 amp esc.. how easy/hard will this be to do?

You'll have to change everything out. It has a proprietary combination radio/speed control and non-conformal servo. It's not too hard, just takes some time. It comes with a straight shaft which you'll want to change to a flex - say 2.3 to 4mm. Get hardware for a mini and it will fit just fine.

After all these years I picked up my boating hobby and found my NQD arrow wind!
took out all the internals and started modding it with spares that I had lying around.
1800kv outrunner, 40A esc (brand unknown) and atock servo.
I even added a carbon fiber inlay to stiff up the canopy..

I’ve got a miss geico 36” as well and hell that one flies. 126km/u my personal best.

next to that also a sonic wake and an M41. They do about 85km/u but I need this Arrow to surpass that😁

No, I regularly sell some of the fleet to make room for others. I've been mostly into jet boats for the last decade. Am down to 9 boats at the time. Will be watching this thread - looking forward to seeing your video.

paint job done! First run wasn’t that kind of a succes. Problems with the rx’s range had me spending more time to retreive my boat than actually running it.
will see if I can fit another radio system to it asap.
