Help ID'ing Motor
 

Hi - I am absolutely new at this. My boy has an old Hotz 43" Electric RTR boat. When we connect the battery the motor runs full out, even with the cables to the reciever disconnected. I assume the ESC is blown. I have no idea what motor I have besides it being a 550. I need motor info in order to get a new ESC. Can anyone identify this motor for me? And maybe recommend an ESC? Thanks

Assuming you have the original motor this says it's a 550. (it also says it will go 35 mph). Ni nont dink so. No mention of the ESC there.

Another interesting bit of info is that the moter has 7.2V stamped on it. The boat came with a 9.6V battery. I guess what I need to know is is this motor brushless.... then I can just get an appropriate ESC

No its not brushless. All those boats come with either Mabuchi or Johnson motors.

They power a 7.2V motor with 9.6V because the inexpensive cells it comes with will drop to that almost, under load. It would be nice to drop in a brushless and change the driveline to suit also.

Any brushed speed control that has a peak rating of 100 amps and a nominal raing of 50 amps will do fine i think.

Most of those brushed 550 motors are mainly used for industrial purposes. The 7.2v stamp on the motor refers to the voltage which life and performance are at best.(give/take relationship) Feeding it 9.6v nominal increases performance at a loss of reliability/life.

All the 700 motors that we have used in the past are 8.4v -12v rated. I used the 700 8.4v motor and ran 14.4v through it for many seasons.

As for an esc any 40A Brushed ESC will work well. The proboat esc is cheap and will work. Make certain it is waterproof.
