charging bats.
 

can anyone tell me the best amps. to recharge a set of 4200 venom and a set of 4600 ib's ?i have a prophet plus charger that charges @ 1,2,or 4 amps. trying to get the best life out of these bats.
i use these bats. in a sv

Best life 1 amp but they should be OK to charge at 4 amps
Do you want to charge for 4 hours (at 1 amp) or 1 hour (at 4 amps) ????

I have a Venom 4200 and it takes 2.5 hours to charge at 4 amps, my 3600 only takes 2 hours to charge at 4 amps. Charging them at 1 amp will take all day. [:'(]

I charge my 4000+ mAh cells with 2A, a good compromise between charging time and lifespan.

thanks guy's I'am trying 2 amps. alittle over 2 hrs. the next question is how long do the bats. hold a good charge before you use them?if you charge them the day before are they still fully charged?

Hi Zee,

NiMH must(!) be used warm from the charger; running them cold, or worse, the next day will cause damage. Due to the high self discharge rate of the high capacity NiMH, the cells will have drifted apart during the night, causing some cells to be depleted before their neighbours, the depleted cells will suffer.

When I have a race the next day, I charge my packs the day before and hook them onto the charger the next day half an hour prior to running them, charging with 2-3A, until the cells are warm again.

The high capacity NiMH are high maintenance cells, treat them properly, or buy yourself replacements all the time...

I switched to Lipo's last year and never gave NiMH a second thought.

Some of the lower performance nimh cells do not self discharge nearly as fast. Jan races so he doesn't remember those:D. All nimh will run better if put in the boat warm but its just not possible if you are running 2 or 3 sets.

You're correct, but the topicstarter mentioned 4200 venom and a set of 4600 IB and the last certainly qualify as high capacity NiMH.

I'm touring the Dutch electrospeed circuit with my son and we take six chargers with us to keep everything charged, timewise it gets hairy if we both have to run in the same heat..., as we run in five classes.
