esc explosion

This is just an FYI ...I am building my first electric boat and purchased all my components from ebay vendors all of them unfortunatly came from china....
When the esc arrived I looked it over and noticed that the ratings given for it on the package differed from what had been advertised for it...I emailed the vendor and 3 days later he tells me that it should be ok to use and to hook it up and try it if it blows he said he would replace it..well ok so I went ahead and followed the enclosed instructions which said to hold full throttle when hooking up the battery so the esc would auto detect and set itself......welllllll when I hooked up the battery a BIG arc and POW unfortunatly I had it in my hand when it went..thank god I have fast reflexes cause then it caught fire......anyway I just wanted you folks to know what hapened imsure im not the only one to buy these cheap parts from e bays china division and id hate to see anyone get hurt like I almost did..

Yalll have funnn and take care

Glad you didn't get hurt.

Good thing for the fast reflex. It's unusual for an ESC to blow out like that in one's hand. When they let go in a boat they may burn a number of things and then there is that ever lasting odour.

Hopefully you can get that replaced as stated.

Well they arent being so very cooperative. I bought another esc from an american vendor so we will see how that one works ..looks like I will have to file a claim with paypal and see if they will get my money back on the deal..they want me to pay to send it back and pay for them to send a new one and they said they didnt want to send a new one until there factory looked at the bad one...so much for there promise to make me happy if there is a problem huh???Just glad I didnt have a lot of money tied up in it...

Yall have funnnn and take care

An ESC made in America? Must have been right there in the joke with the Easter Bunny, the smart blonde, and Santa Klaus!! :)

Seriously - Castle, LRP, novak etc. are all very reputable brands, but they're all made in Taiwan, Korea or China. I think the problem is that you bought a cheapo junk.

Good luck with the new one man.

and followed the enclosed instructions which said to hold full throttle when hooking up the battery so the esc would auto detect and set itself......

The pic you posted looks a lot like a Mystery / Himodel / Swang ESC to me. I have all three so I have a clue here. They are all the same beast, just a different shrink wrap and decal.
Of the ones that I have and for all the research that I have done on them, I have NEVER seen an instruction to "hold full throttle" while hooking up the battery.

These cheap chinese ESC's are out of the packet "good to go" in my experience.

There are programing methods that include a lot of beeps and tones. I have not used them.

I have one in my test rigger that has cleared 50 mph. This is a 4S setup to a 7XL on a 637 prop.
There is a lot more to come from this hull !!

wow sorry to hear that. i have had 4 esc's from e-bay and so far i have been lucky. i bought one "just to see what would happen"
in my supervee 27. running 22.2v and a 2200kv motor.well.... its still holding. running a cf45 prop, and man it hauls. cheap fun .melted the heatshrink off the esc, but it still continues to run .. fast!!. call me crazy, but im sure everyone has done this one time or another.
i hope your next esc is ok. get back in the water.

Ill be glad to scan the instruction sheet in and let you see for your self...I am new to electrics and have no idea how to set these things up other than read the directions that came with it and follow them and yes this thing was suposed to beep one long beep and then begin some type of beep countdown and I was suposed to toggle the throttle full off to select which beep I wanted...weird way to do it I thought guess I was right.....

Mickvk. I didnt mean purchase an american made esc I realize there is no such thing they are all made overseas.I meant I needed to deal with an american vendor..and I am fairly certain that if the esc they sent me had been rated for my battery and motor load it probably would be working fine right now for all of you that have the chinese esc's that are working fine I bet if you look at the specs for your battery and motor they fall within the specs for your esc and they should work just fine..my point is the vendor lied in there desription of the esc and then didnt want to admit to the mistake and told me to run it anyway..my intent on posting this was to make my fellow rcers aware of the deception on the part of the vendor NOT that all chinese parts are bad. it wasent the esc's fault it wasent rated for what I hooked it up to I only did it on the insistance of the vendor. they told me it was rated for 3 to 16 volts but the label it came with said it was only rated for 3 to 13 volts.1.8 volts isnt much but its enough...and since posting this I have had to file a claim with ebay to tryto get this setteled the vendor wants me to pay more money for them to fix this..

BTW this is a pic of the boat it was going to be used for.

P.S. I just saw a new thread in general boat discussion think its named how to stop beeping something like that anyway in the first post he says the instructions told him to hold full throttle to set the esc..so see simon o Im not nuts

I have read the other thread and I will clarify that, at no point did I suggest that you are "nuts"

I stated that these esc's all will function out of the packet quite well and that there are options to program them via a series of beeps and stick movements
I have since done one to prove that it can be done however I will never do so again as they work just as well out of the packet.

FWIW
Here are a two things that will kill a low cost Chinese speedie.
1. Lots of water while attached to a battery
2. Reverse polarity on the battery side

There are more ways but these two are sure-fire esc killers.

I trust that this will remain as a constructive discussion and may be of benefit to future buyers of esc's from E-bay or HK/HC

Wasent upset by your coment sorry if you thought I was..anything rated for 13 volts that gets hooked up to 14.8 is gonna smoke. the vendor should have been honest and admitted to there mistake and there wouldnt have been a problem

Don't sweat it. I'm cool. ;)

It is a bummer that you found out the hard smokey way that the esc was not up to the job. Bad call by the seller / vendor.
If one other person can learn from this and not kill a esc then it is worth all the typing.

I have a few Chinese speedies and for what I want they are just fine.
There is nothing wrong with the product but there are a few vendors that need to clean up thier game.

BINGO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the product is fine vendor trying to rip people off is the problem..the new esc should be here next week and I have the boat almost ready for paint. and cant wait to get this creation on the water and see what happens I bet the new esc works great I ordered one that is suposed to handle 60 a and up to 18 volts so I should be ok

RE: esc explosion

OK just so you folks know..the vendore never did replace the esc nor did he refund my money all he wanted was me to remove the negative feedback BEFORE he would consider any replacement or refund..I gave him 2 weeks to make it right before I left the feedback I think I was fair soo please avoid anything to do with artmall88 on ebay

RE: esc explosion

I din't read it in the O.P., but I assume there was a motor connected to the other end of the ESC when it blew...?

Regards, Jan.

Purchase a Hydra 120 or similar from Offshoreelectrics and you will be backed up with a bit more confidence.
