FE beginner question
 

I finally got my FE tunnel ready to run. (It only took a year!) I took it out yesterday and it ran about 30 secs before it ground to a halt and would not start again. I didn't spend a lot on equipment since I didn't know if I would like it or not. I'm using a 36/56 Feisuda 3300rpm/v motor on OS lower and a Mystery 60A ESC on 14.8v. The motor sounded wicked powerful on the bench so before I put it in the water I used the transmitter to set it so the rpm were limited (there's a knob on the front that allows me to turn down the travel). I wasn't sure how the new boat would handle so I figured slow was good to start. Like I said it ran fine for about 30 seconds and just stopped. No sign of smoke or water in the box. I went to a friends and we swapped some stuff and determined the motor is ok. When I hook up the lipo I get no beeps at all. No signal loss warning and no start warning. I would just like to know if I did something wrong or was it just a bad esc? Maybe a setting in the esc? Maybe turning it down on the transmitter? What would be a good (economical) esc to use with this motor?

Im no pro, but the same has happened to me. I think the ESC is gone! May have over heated if you didnt have proper cooling. I'd invest in a good marine Castle Creations ESC.
If you can test to see if thats what happened first if you have access to annother esc to test it with

Do you know any more information about the motor or a website with info about the motor.
What size is the motor? 380, 540?
Motor amp draw?
What is the Prop size/type of prop?
Have you water cooled the esc and motor?
This information could help find the reason why it isn't working. Any pictures of the setup would help also.

From what it sound, I believe the esc has blown due to the amp load(Too Many Amps)

It's a 540 size (I think)
I had 438/3 blade prop on it
The motor and ESC are both cooled. The esc has a watercooed plate attached to the top of the heat sink. There was evidence that water had flowed thru the entire system. There was still water in the motor cooling can. Water goes thru the ESC first and exits at the motor.
I know from substituting in some other parts, the motor is good and the ESC has failed. I'm just trying to find out why so I don't do it again.
Like I said earlier, it only ran at a slow speed (15mph maybe?) for about 30 seconds. I ran it at home on the bench (no water) for a couple minutes at a slow speed. During that time the ESC temp went up 2 degrees and the motor temp went up 20 degrees.

That motor has alot of kv for a 4s setup, it could be pulling to many amps and killed your esc..

It explains why it worked ok on land but not in water. I have blown a esc from doing this before.

The site dosn't tell you about the peak amps. The peak amps should be 70-75% of the esc current rate. If you are thinking of getting another mystery esc, I would recommend buying a 100A or 200A version. This way you can be sure to be safe from amp spikes on the water. Also there is a thread on rcuniverse which shows you how to watercool the esc by removing the heatsink and placing it inbetween the plates of the esc if you haven't seen it already.

I hope the esc is reliable as I have just ordered one(100A) of them for my brushless conversion. They are just so cheap.

If you were worried about the boat going to fast till you get used to it you should use a smaller prop
Do not run an esc at 1/2 way cause it will heat up alot
If your boat was going that slow (15mph maybe?) it would have been working harder than normal pushing through the water and made it heat up even more
I am using the SV motor and esc with the same voltage you are and same size prop
With your set up you are turning 3300 X 14 volts and mine is 2000 X 14 volts
You will be drawing way too many amps
Try less volts if you want to keep this motor

Eboat, Thanks for your reply. I suspected that running that motor slow like that may have been the problem. I think I'll just change this over to the SV 27 motor and ESC and try that. This motor may see life in another project now that I have a better understanding of what it needs.

The SV motor should do very well for you in this boat!
