I am currently working on my Villain IV. I would like to get it as fast as I can WITH the stock outdrives.

This is not going to be my supper fast wicked awesome boat. so with out changing to much I just want a little more speed.

Right now I have it upgraded to run 3/16" (octra) props. and the ESC has been replaced with a Proboat blue BRUSHED ESC. It can handle 10 cells, or [should] handle 3s. I also have a water cooling kit on the way. (coils for 540/550 motors and pick ups)


First question, where do you get pinions from? (I have no real LHS to speak of, so online is fine)

Second question, What motors would be a good upgrade, but not so powerful that it will twist and trash the outdrives and props.
If I go with different brushed motors, I will just keep the same ESC, otherwise it (they) will be Turnigy Marine 60A/120A ESC's.

If I go to brushless, I will setup the boat to run either 2s, or 4s. I would prefer 4s. so. . .

Going with 4s, and keeping the stock 2:1 (28:14) gearing (I know, I say it to, direct drive, but this is a simple motor swap upgrade) I am looking for around a 4400kv motor. (this will give about 3200 prop rpm)

the other thing is all the motors I have looked at have a 5mm shaft, so I need a new pinion anyhow, I can get a larger one and drop to motor kv down as well.

at this point I seem to be chasing my tail. So what do you suggest? (and where do you get pinions???)

Not sure what you mean by "comparable".
Are you looking for a similar spec brushless motor to replace the stock brushed units?
If you're looking to upgrade, then you dont want a "comparable" motor, you want something better, right??

Or maybe I dont fully understand your situation.

I am looking to upgrade, but only slightly because I want to keep the outdrives.  This boat is going to be my "learner" boat.  Fun to drive, but still stable and easy to run.  For the wife, kids, other people's kids, and friends who don't do R/C.<div>

</div><div>So, slightly better, but not so much power that it strips the gears and twists the crap out of the flimsy outdrives.  Stock it runs about 16 mph, the EX does about 20 mph I think, so if I can swap the motors (and respective ESC's) to get it up to about 20-25 mph, I would be very happy.</div><div>

oh, and a can size the same as 540/550's would be nice as that is the cooling kit I have fits the 540/550 stock motors.<div>

Just about any BL motor setup will present you with problems if you want to keep the gears. Most BL motors that will drop in also have 5mm motor shafts. No small pinions will fit them. You would also need two escs to run two bl motors. The outdrives are not strong and can take only a modest power increase but 20 to 25mph should be ok.

what motor would someone suggest then?  maybe a set of brushed motors and hight tooth pinion for them?  Still wondering where to get pinion gears from?
