TOTAL NEWBIE !!!
Need suggestions. Want to get a CAT. Looking at the Proboat RTR "Miss Geico" or ordering a "Godspeed" hull (w/hardware) and building from there. Any input would be great.
|
RE: TOTAL NEWBIE !!!
Gief us something to work with.... Links on your boats, hulls and so on.... I suggest eletric power if this is not going to be your daily hobby.
My experience says that nitro and fuel you have to work with... Battery is way easier to work with, and the maintenance aswell is easier. The hull of a good overall starter boat should be 70 cm - 110 cm long. I think its very nice at 95 cm :) A good eletric 95 cm boat is a good way to go. Room for improvment and so on.... Take care that the hull you are looking at, is not the best for steering. There are better for steering, and also better hulls for speed. The motors nowadays are so powerful, so i suggest go for a steering hull. Maybe a FSV-R hull with propeller underneath is nice. Or just a Deep V. Search for hulls. This dossent means the hull you found cant be used. I personally just think there are better hulls.
|

RE: TOTAL NEWBIE !!!
I run both fuel and electric. In my experience much more can go wrong with electric and these mistakes are costly! You can rebuild a nitro motor for a few bucks, burnt electronics go in the garbage! But they are faster! Your initial startup costs are lower with one of the name brand rtr nitro boats. A gallon of fuel and your pretty much good to go! No chargers, power supplies, multiple battery packs to buy or charge. And you will want multiple packs unless you enjoy watching your batteries charge at the lake! I find I can run a lot more in a day with my nitro boats as all I have to do is bring it in fill the tank and go again.
The main drawback is finding a place to run the noisy little buggers! Really six of one half a dozen of the other, I like the smell of burning nitro, an engine sounds better than jebus when turning 25000 rpm! At the cottage I can run the electrics without bugging the neighbors too much! I really enjoy both but honestly do think the new smaller ready to run nitro boats are the best bang for the buck! less field equipment required about the same upfront cost for the actual boat. The new nitro boats have either a pull starter or you can get an adapter that goes in a cordless drill for some makes. So many companies have hopped on the electric rtr bandwagon that you have to know what your looking at or you get ripped off. Aquacraft and Proboat are the two biggies in the ready to run world and offer both nitro and electric versions, Hydros, cats and monohulls are available from both of them. I don't think you'd go wrong with either of these companies, replacement parts are easily available from almost any hobby shop. And you get peace of mind knowing the company will be there next week! Many people have products from these companies and all the tricks and tips are well known on these forums. LOL I know that didn't help much maybe with the exception of the two manufacturers I mentioned! To each his own, we all love this hobby and who really cares what makes your boat go as long as you're having fun and out there promoting it in a positive way! Cheers and welcome to the hobby, before you know it you'll have been addicted for 25 years! Wait that means I'll have had this problem for 50 years then! Oh NO! Chances are I'll be dead from inhaling all the assorted chemicals in these things! LOL Hmmm must go see if my JAE 12 hull is ready for a wet sanding, hope to be shooting colour later today, Pearl green and pearl purple over a white base! Pics will come soon as I get my camera back! it went on holiday without me! |

Mikethk: Thanks for the input. The Godspeed hull is sold by r2hobbies.com. It comes in four base colors and configured 1) hull w/o hardware, 2) hull w/hardware, 3) hull w/hardware&motor. They have all in stock depending on color you want. I'm leaning towards options # 2 in all white. Shipped to the door is $160.00, not to bad.
Husky:I hear you on the nitro. I love it in any form - RC, Full size drags...... I have had rc trucks in the past and know first hand that this is a hobby formwhich requires deep pockets and passion. Thats why I'm leaning towards buying a hull and building from there. I currently have a HPI MT2 and a LOSI Dessert Truck(electric) so I get your point on having to decide on one our the other. |
RE: TOTAL NEWBIE !!!
Hull and hardware is a good option, usually electronics and motor they cheap out on. What size shaft does it have on it? Octura, prather and grimracer propellers are all imperial shaft sizes and have a huge selection of props, 1/8 is used for smaller stuff, 3/16 probably has the widest selection of props, 1/4 is for the big guys. The metric sizes are becoming more popular and I believe adapters are available, although I very well could be wrong on that one! You can use a bit of brass tubing to shim down a 3/16 sized prop to fit a 1/8 shaft.
It may be overkill but I use 3/16 on just about everything, mostly because I already have a selection of props in that shaft size. |
