There are a few questions you need to answer to get you started:
- What kind of hull do you want to run? There are vee, cat and hydroplane with sub-types of each
- How big do you want your boat to be? Larger means more power which means bigger engine, prop, etc
- How are you going to run your boat? Is it going to be a "fun toy", racer or other?
- How big of lake or pond are you going to be running on? Smaller water areas means smaller boat, larger or rougher areas mean larger boat
