Howdy
the flex shaft is what we use but the hardware is what hooks it all up. the engine usually has a drive ferrule with a square hole for the flex shaft then we contain this in a brass tube leading out of the boat to the strut hangin off the back where the shaft is contained in anither ferrule that holds the prop shaft drive dog prop and prop nut, or some boats use a drive system which doesnt use a strut it just pokes out the transom at the hull bottom mono's use this quite often.
as far as the engines go for a sport boat you can pretty much just throw the engine in there, remove the bottom mounted tank place this under the bow and rig up a throttle system and you are boating..... the honda is an excellent powerplant (gx31 mini 4 stroke) lots of these around used (ebay) and new is right at $200.
weed whacker engines can be had for a few dollars at yard sales and most just suffer from plugged mufflers or a stuck gummed up ring.
so if you are resource ful enuff most of the hardware can be hand made but there are lots of engine less hulls layin around for cheap. its not always the best way to reinvent the wheel
good luck
