Do you use polyester resin to join the deck or epoxy? Also what size fiberglass tape?

RE: 50" Project PLUG build & Fiberglass Molding
Thanks Sharpy. Glassing the inside hull takes a little more time, but pays off in the finished product. Having a perfectly smooth and seamless hull just makes me smile . By the way, thanks to Dana for the assistance with the idea .
One of these boats is in the marketplace, have some good inside pictures there of the glasswork.

RE: 50" Project PLUG build & Fiberglass Molding
Just thought I'd share these. A member ordered one of my Dreamin's and asked for a very specific color..NEON YELLOW by House of Kolors. Here it is just before clearcoat. I plan to add some pearl in the 1'st layer of clear to "tone it down" a little and give it some more "pop". Man, these pictures just don't do justice...she's bright!

Are you gonna do a C1 style cat ever? I've seen this hull for sale on here, but this is the first time reading your build thread. Very impressive.

RE: 50" Project PLUG build & Fiberglass Molding
Thank you. I do have a cat plug I've been playing with. Hopefully I'll be finished the mold by fall and shortly be building cats. Have the lower hull of the cat at 45"...seems to be about the right size.
I just wanted to share these pics because I've never sprayed neon yellow on anything this large before. Very striking and looks insane with the pearl added to the 1'st layer of clearcoat. When it hardens, I'll stick on that canopy and take it into the sun for more pics. This customer is coming down to pick up Saturday so have to be quick with a photo op.

Yes Dana, vids will be not too far away. Problem with vids now is with school out now, no paychecks! I've been building these to keep a few extra dollars coming in during the summer months. Being paid by the school system only during school season kind of sucks. Also each time I build one for me, it usually ends up being sold to local boaters...happened 3 times already. Love the money it brings in, but theres other places it has to go first before an engine and hardware get here.

This is a great thread cool to see it come to life.I have a question at any point are you going to make an open deck to take it back to the wood style roots? It would be cool to have a flat deck(buy this I mean slight curve) with v style wind screen kinda like a glass wood deck look.
Do you have any pics of one all rigged up?And what does it weigh?

Sweet Project D-Hemi, Sifted thrugh posts to look for total laminate weights in cloth and matt on parts.. Just cuz I'm curious for my own long overdue project. Would you be ok with listing a laminate schedule?

Just lay your matt one on top of the other while still wet makes for lighter build yet strong ,i used 300 csm matt with 450 on top thats it apart from glass tape on the rails,Scott might have done diff as i think he used cloth as last layer but you can use matt just as easy and strong too.

RE: 50" Project PLUG build & Fiberglass Molding
LOL, no problem buddy, there are no secrets here and thanks for the compliment....
I'll give it to you as I normally would in a fully prepped mold (waxed and PVA'd)
1'st layer Sprayed on gelcoat - either 2 medium heavy coats or 1 HEAVY coat.
2'nd layer 1.5 oz mat fiberglass, or .75oz for a slightly lighter build
3'rd layer 6 or 7 oz cloth fiberglass (depends where I get it), or another layer of the 1.5 oz mat
Both layers of glass are rolled out one after the other while the resin is still wet in the mold. Total time for all glasswork is maybe 30-40 minutes, depend how long the resins give me with the room temperature.
Thats it! Theres the secret formula.
I've been experimenting with materials and may build an entire hull with just 2 layers of 7oz cloth, that may be next month as I have a few orders to finish up first.
You could use .75oz mat instead of the 1.5 to save a little weight...usually 1/2 lb could be saved that way, but the upper deck will be more flexible and possibly easier to crack the gelcoat. I build these hulls and designed the upper deck so there are no formers or bracking required to hold firm. Personally since these are really fun sport speed boats that can take good waves and chop, I woulden't worry about the weight savings and stick with 1.5oz mat with the 7oz cloth. Most of mine are done this way and haven't had a complaint yet.
Keep an eye out for my own Dreamin' CS (DCS) build thread...will probably be mostly pictures, but using a top notch radio, heavy duty hardware from WHH, and a fully modded Neurotoxin engine. Should be a wild ride with an airbrushed flame job. May start laying glass by the weekend if I get these last couple customer hulls finished by then. Pictures will be showing detailed views of exactly how a fiberglass boat is built in the molds, step by step. Engine, hardware, and radio install, custom paint job, and finally vids of the results. Getting chills just thinking about this next build. Stay tuned!

RE: 50" Project PLUG build & Fiberglass Molding
Sweet, I'm on track with lam's though I have larger spans of flat deck to contend with. I've tried gel, .75 matt, 9oz +-45, .75 matt, 6oz std. glass with decent results. I'm going to try 1208 knytex, 6oz std. glass on the next one.1208 being 12oz. of +-45 with .08matt attached. And I've swithed to only duratec for gel material. Thanks for the info/help.

RE: 50" Project PLUG build & Fiberglass Molding
I wasent trying to say change your top deck just if you had thought about makeing another option for thoes who like the open style. The bottom of that boat is perfect line and style wise just not big on the hatch from proboat.Dont get me wrong the whole boat is very nice just it seams most builders offer 2 tops.
On a side note I had bought a easy vee to do just as you have(I did read yours was made from diffrent plans and is 50) use it for a plug and change the top a bit(add some curve windscreen and deck at the transom)and of corse straks for the bottom.but keep that shal we say 80s wood look.
Like how you capp your hulls and the paint looks perfect on them.

yeah, I also like that look of Dana's windscreen. Just don't have the time to make a plug, another mold...ect. Perhaps after a while the bug will get me to do it. Until then, I have enough projects in the works

Just FYI, this thread "continues" into a full out build from laying the fiberglass to installing hardware, engine and radio. Here is the link...
