RE: MaxCatV1-L Scratch Build
You don't have to wet anything, it should all be glued to the ribs and so will hold it's shape when cut.
Why not create the canopy on the deck, see how it looks and then cut it out of the deck.

RE: MaxCatV1-L Scratch Build
Thank you Marcel for the info on not wetting the top. That is the way I was going to do the canopy on top the deck and then cutting it out and using it for a plug.

Are you talking about this cat? a 48" version of this cat won't hold a zenoah inside or you have a canopy like a flat building on top of it...
In my V2 cat the zenoah will hardly fit and that has 0.5cm more headroom then the V1...
Without the overhang this cat is almost the same size as a PPB Skater, so it really isn't that big.
With the hardware mounted it's hardly larger because the hardware is inside the space between the overhang.
So I guess a 48" version can hold a nitro engine, but not a zenoah...

Harold, forgive me for using your building thread and communicating with Marcel. But at least we are talking about the same boat. Marcel, I dropped my Zenoah into the hull and guess what: Perfect fit! I will e-mail you my AutoCad drawing to demonstrate it. I think you 'll like what you gonna see.

Hello Virginian, I have got no problem with you using this thread to communicating with Marcel, I whish I had AutoCAD so I could see what you have done with the plans. I find it vary interesting to see what others are doing with the Maxcat-V1.

RE: MaxCatV1-L Scratch Build
Hi virginian, please do send me the drawings, I would like to look at them.
One other reason for the long hull [overhang] is that I wanted the exhaust incl mufler inside the hull.
My exhaust fits just inside the hull, without making a pigs curl in the header
Lowering the tunnel is the only solution for the zenoah to fit, but keep in mind that a lower tunnel [and maybe in ratio wider?] will give more lift.
This extra lift could make it tricky to run. I lowered the tunnel 1cm in the V2 and changed from a round to a triangle tunnel shape.to counter effect the extra lift that a lower tunnel gives.
The V1 cat runs great, also with more wind. Since it's almost always windy here that was the best way to go for me.
So in short, just build the changed V1 and show us how it runs!!

RE: MaxCatV1-L Scratch Build
I just got the bottom of the hull coated with 1 ½ oz fiber glass, had to do it in two stages to get it all on the hull, waiting for the 2nd stage to dry, then I will sand all the edges flip the hull and do the top and sides in one Pease. Then I will start the canopy.

RE: MaxCatV1-L Scratch Build
Really enjoying the thread. Great work! Can't believe the wife allows that in your spare room or living room I'm torn now on whether to make my next build this one or TheVirginian's hydro.
Quick question on your build in terms of the sheeting for the deck, tunnel etc. I didn't see any designs for those in the drawings. Did you just build the skin around the stringers and such? Just curious.
Can't wait to see the next steps.

RE: MaxCatV1-L Scratch Build
Hello Photoguy, There are no designs for the sheeting in the plans for the build, I just cut the sheeting a bit over sized and when the glue setup I plained and sanded it off, I used 1/16th ply on the tunnel and 1/8th for the sides and top deck, it is not hard to get the sheeting to fit. Have fun on you build, witch ever one you do.

Hi Harold,
want to give you this tip: put glas on the red marked seems, they ripped open on my cat when doing my PR on choppy water.
After I made that fast run the seem on both sponson ripped open for 40cm, not sure why but after I repaired it with glas it never happened again.

RE: MaxCatV1-L Scratch Build
Hi virginian, thanx for the drawing.
I looked at them and it looks great
You lowered the tunnel another cm to my V2 and the hull is also shorter, my guess is that this cat will be a flight risk
The only thng I don't like is the exhaust sticking out of the hull, that was one of the main reasons I wanted a longer cat.
To say the PUM will fit AOK is stretching it a bit , it fits with a decent size roofscoop, that is of coarse not a problem.
maybe the CG will be a bit hard to get right, but that you can only find out when it's build.
So start building and show us the result!

I am getting a lot of grief from my wife for have the build in that room! I lost my building area to my sun; He moved out of a house and needed some place to store all his stuff, so me being Mr. nice guy I let him use my garage. I do not do any sanding or any thing like that in that room.

Hi Virginian, I think you asked me how I was able to view Marcel's plans for the MaxCat-V1, when I downloaded the plans from his build site I got the AutoCad and PDF files.

Hi Marcel, Thank you for the tip on glassing the red marked seems. I just got the top and sides glassed now, after the epoxy resin sets I will sand all the sharp outside edges and and glass over the with about a 1” strip of glass.

RE: MaxCatV1-L Scratch Build
Question for you guys is the tunnel stright or does it get smaller or larger as it goes front to back?On a 1/1 boat it gets smaller as it goes back to compress the air I noticed on my 41 Falcon it is smaller at the front wich is wrong from what I know about 1/1 boats is this better for RC ?

Just wondering!
What do you think of cutting holes in the bottom of the over hangs to let out the heat from the motor?

Hi Harold,
I thought of doing this also on my small V2 cat but then I remembered a picture....
Don't do this it will flood the cat when it's not running.

Thank you Marcel that is what I was afraid of that might happen, but I thought I would ask any way to see what others thought. The picture you posted makes it vary clear, not to try this!
