MaxCatV1-L Scratch Build

RE: MaxCatV1-L Scratch Build
Hey Harold;
You are not wasting your time by filleting and glassing the inside. If you want to do a plug the structure must be as sturdy as possible. Only then you are guaranteed a straight plug for you negative mold.

Ditto.....it sometimes takes a lot of wedging, and pulling to release a large plug from a mold. When I removed MY upper deck plug from the mold, the transom area decided stick behind and break off. It was basically foam and balsa anyway, but your definately doing the right thing....
Here is a picture of the busted plug, and the mold that was created from it. BTW, the mold is perfect!

Good work Harold!
Even if you don't make a mold it is best to do this.
This way the glassing will be much easier, I did not do this on my first build because it thought it would take to much time [was in a hurry, got a bit tired of building].
I regretted this as soon as I put the glass in....this took me a lot longer and never came in as I wanted it to.

RE: MaxCatV1-L Scratch Build
Hello every one, Thank you all for your comments, you all set me straight on the fillets and glassing the inside, make a lot sense to me now. Oh Mart there is nothing wrong with a wood boat, I love wood any thing, I have just never made a mold and fiber glass boat before and wont to give it a try, something to do with my time, After all as I said before, the building part of this hobby is my fevered part. OK back to the build, I got the inside of the hull glassed today, looks a little sloppy but I think after I cut out all the excess glass and do some sanding and touch up it will be ok. Here are a few pictures.
Harold
PS. Fuelman8 yes it may just be your next woody, if I can pop the mold off it with out wrecking it, time will tell.
I also put two layers of glass on the tunnel sheeting where the motor goes.

Looks great Harold[sm=thumbs_up.gif]
Just do a really good job of trimming and sanding it, I think that's really important as you may have to donate it to someone[sm=wink_smile.gif][sm=wink_smile.gif]
If you need that battery to jump start the pacemaker you're working way to hard!!!

Harold, really looking forward to see how this turns out, looks absolutely perfect so far. What kind of resins did you end up using...general epoxy or polyester?

RE: MaxCatV1-L Scratch Build
Well, I don't think that the inside needed glassing, to be honest with you. It really costs you time and money for very little, if any gain. You rather should spend the material on the out side, because it takes a lot of sanding to get a nice smooth surface for a plug.

RE: MaxCatV1-L Scratch Build
Thank you Scott for your comments, it is not the easiest boat that I ever built but I think it should turn out ok. I used epoxy resin that I had left over from the mono build, I had to finish it with epoxy finishing resin after running out of the other. I think I will be using polyester when I make the mold.

RE: MaxCatV1-L Scratch Build
I get my resins from a boat repair shop. They are the largest and most expensive in the state here. I get all my resins and glass from them exclusively. Can't beat $20/gallon resin which is HIS cost that he just hands to me. This stuff really wets out nicely. Don't get that resin made by Bondo for your mold. WAY too thick and takes a lot of tooling to get the mat to saturate. I did not glass the outside of my mono plug. That would have required way too much prep work. I just literally skimmed the entire exterior with glazing compound to fill in all the grain, sanded and primered just 2 coats and it was perfect, ready for final paint. The molds are fun to make, just need to be patent and take yout time. How do you plan to half the molds? Or, how will you be adding your flange? Just while making your plug, think 10 steps ahead. The steps I followed making my molds and parts are the same everywhere, hopefully my build thread of the Dreamin' CS molds gave you some ideas. I certantly learned a lot from doing them! Have a cat already to start molding...like I have time to start this again..

Harold just be aware if you epoxy coat your plug you cant use poly resin over it or it wont go off as it reacts with epoxy .So you might want to use poly on the plug first?.

RE: MaxCatV1-L Scratch Build
I choose to use gelcoat to paint my lower hull (epoxy) before making my mono mods. 5 coats of partall paste wax (100% carnuba), and sprayed 2 layers partall #10, basically a liner or release agent. I used polyester resins to make the molds and came out perfect. If the polyester resins are applied directly over epoxy without a barrier, you MAY have a reaction, just never personally tried. My opinion is to not waste your time glassing or even covering your outside hull with anything but paint. It will come out looking like glass, and resin will not have any reaction when you build your molds. Really, no matter what you cover the outside hull with, no reactions of any kind should occur if you properly prep for the molding process using mold wax and release agent. I've molded parts covered in enamel, laquer, housepaint (dont ask), gelcoat, plastic, epoxy and poly resins without many issues, however I may have just been lucky!

RE: MaxCatV1-L Scratch Build
All i know is poly resin WILL react to epoxy i tried it ! funny thing is epoxy will cure over poly.Just dont want him wasting his time and effort for nothing .Im sure if you use plenty of wax it may be ok maybe im been too cautious i dont know.I would def just paint it and leave it then just prep as normal with your wax or whatever you wanna use.

If you need anything else for the build let me know by e-mail. I won't be on this site anymore until they quit being afraid of a little competition and change thier rules.

RE: MaxCatV1-L Scratch Build
Harold, why make a mold of a cat that you have never seen running or have never run yourself? And you know that there is a V2....This is not for nothing there are issues with the V1, just not a lot
I'm going to build the V2 first, see if all changes are possitive, see what needs to be changed and then maybe next year I'll make a V3 plug...But I would never do all that work on a V1 hull.
I would just keep it as a wooden hull and see how it goes, maybe this is the crapiest cat you have ever run with....
So I would go for a 'woody' and see what you want changed before you start on a mold, but that's just me...
A wooden hul will run just as well as an epoxie hull and will also not be heavier, if the epoxie hull is much lighter it's to thin to take the stress for high speed.
But keep up the good work, it coming along fine!

RE: MaxCatV1-L Scratch Build
Wife was working at Disney tonight so after work I started sanding the inside of the hull, the fiber glassing I did to the inside, left some of the tools laying for pictures.

RE: MaxCatV1-L Scratch Build
Hello
Sorry I have not posted for a longer time then normal, I have got the inside of the hull all sealed with resin and now I am ready to go on to the next part of this build. I am not sure if I will be doing the bottom putting on the ride pads, spray rails, and I think one strait on each side. Or go to the top deck, as it looks to me I think I can get all of the flotation in the hull even after the deck is on, seeing as I do not have any pool noodles right now. I am not sure how I am going to do the deck yet and the cockpit cover, I think I need to ask Marcel some question this part of the build. I have some picture to post if I can find out where my wife hid the camera.
Harold
OK wife is not home, can’t find camera, Will post the picture later.

Take the time and add your chines and strakes. There will be a few that say they're not needed, but hey, even if that's true, they sure LOOK cool [sm=shades_smile.gif]

RE: MaxCatV1-L Scratch Build
I may be way out in left field, but I was thinking of adding this to the cat build, I don’t now if you will all understand the drawing that I made using paint. I was thinking it would let the stuffing tube cut though the water better and maybe work like a turn fin. I would like some input on this, Thank You
