The etrex weights 0.33 pound and the 101 weights 2.6 oz, if you placed a etrex on the front of your boat, it would effect your boat's CG more then the lighter one.

true, but in my case it's just forward of the motor. still i'd like to see the speed difference between the 2. like i said i'd bet it's just a 1,or 2 mph difference, and if it were used in all the boats at the pond then they would be carrying the same weight, and give a equal speed rating on that day. hell run just a few oz of fuel to go faster also.

so my etrex is twice the weight. i used this converter:

http://www.onlineconversion.com/weight_common.htm

i'd still like to see the speed difference. i also think you can get a etrex cheaper on evil bay. only paid $45 shipped for mine used.

doubt it will make any difference at all, lighter isnt allways faster anyway so as far as added weight goes i wouldnt even worry about that little amount as in my opinion it wont make any difference at all.

Jerry theres loads of guys who instead of balancing the boat correctly in the first place add lbs of weght up front to keep the nose down and claim the boats faster now lol.My thinking to that has allways been sure it might be but think how much faster it would be without that 1 1/2lb of lead up front and balanced correctly in the first place .2.6oz wont make a blind bit of difference in my opinion especially if its close to the motor.

For an accuracy test sit the unit on a picnic table or similar near your water park. Reset the maximum speed and then check it again in about a half an hour. That number should be your +/- factor for any speed readings.

Without a correction signal within close proximity to the unit you are using the accuracy can vary with weather conditions.

keep the fastest

the reason I went with the forerunner 201 was not a weight issue, but a size issue.

when testing in the gas boats the Etrex series is fine, there's plenty of room but I also wanted to test the Nitro boats and some of them room is an issue.

the foretrex and forerunner series (101, 201, 301) are 3.2"x1.7"x0.7" and my friends Etrex Legend is 4.4"x2"x1.2" and that one doesn't fit in a 21 sport hydro or rigger (well not in the SSP).

all of those GPS are fine if you have the room and its cheap go with the Etrex series, no room, go with the smaller one.

Eric,

I don't know how old the info you provided is but it as changed quite a few years back.
all of today's GPS are 3 Dimensional (well, maybe not the ones from the stone age).

here's some details between 2D and 3D:

The difference is primarily how many satellites are used to compute the position fix and how elevation is computed. In 2D (two-dimensional) only three satellites are needed for a position fix and elevation is not computed. Any elevation displayed during 2D operation is the elevation you entered. In 3D (three-dimensional), a minimum of four satellites are needed to compute the position and elevation at the same time. Elevation calculations are greatly affected by Selective Availability (SA), no longer being used to intentionally degrade GPS signals. If SA is ever reinitialized by the Department of Defense, your calculations of elevation may fluctuate.

I had both of them before until the Etrex didn't work due to the water stayed in the screen and won't try out, for me , I preffer the small and light one like fortrex, it would effect less for the CG of the boat especially when you test a light weight gas rigger, if I put a Etrex in it, I'd need to raised the strut a bit to balance the CG back to get the correct speed.

Eric,

I agree, depending on the type and size of the boat weight matters.

Yea I know I guess I need to start putting it in a ziplock bag (everything)the word you are talking about say you put the big yellow gps in the nose and ran the boat then took it outand ran it its probely going to blow off because of the weight diffrence.I put mine(small grey one) betwine the motor and servo box in the rite side pool noodle could not tell a diffence in or out.

There is a cut to the size of the square hole on the floatation tube to put my small GPS in it, less vibration and works really good.

Garmin Etrex and Garmin Geko are not waterproof even when new. Ask me how I know.[8D] They can be dried out though. To keep them dry I use an Aquapac sealed bag which is made specially for the GPS's.

The Foretrex 201 is completely waterproof...something like down to 3 meters for half an hour is what I think I read. I just use Velcro and stick it to the top of my radio box cover.
