Well, after a short interruption I am back at my project. Here are some pictures of my latest progress. The bottom skin is on. Next step is the sides and then the deck. This boat seems to be the perfect size for this motor. I am hoping to have a fast cat with this size.

Looking good Alex. Are you going to run the exhaust inside the hull, or out over the top.

Hi Alex, the Max-48 cat is looking vary good, the motor looks like it is going to fit ok, I can’t tell by the picture, how high will the canopy have to be? Did you lower the tunnel? It kind of looks like in the #3 picture. Keep the picture coming Alex, Great job.

I did lower the tunnel by 3/8". Actually the motor does not stick out the top too far. A rather shallow canopy will do to hide it. The pipe will run out on top of the deck, which falls off at the transom anyway. More pictures to follow soon.

Sorry about the silence on my thread. I know, but I just posted over on Harold's thread. With the season at the end there is no particular rush in finishing any boat projects. My problem is I am working on too many projects at the same time. One of my buddies just finished his wooden Whiplash, which inspired me totally and I am designing my own Whiplash clone right now. That's going to be my next build, planned as a winter project. In case you are still interested, my Miss Llumar runs O.K. but still has some issues to be ironed out. That will be done next spring. After I finished my airplane project I will concentrate solely on my cat, I promise.

Well, guys, believe it or not, but I am back ( no, I 'm not Arnie :D) Back with my build, that is. After several month of slackin' off, I finally decided to jump start my cat project and bring it to an end. Actually I wasn't slackin' off at all. I had to built several airplaines before and over the winter. But now I am determined to do nothing else, except build my cat. Last year I stopped by putting the bottom on it. Now I continued with the side walls and the interior. First, all was getting a water proofing coat of epoxy. Then I threaded strips of foam into the sponsons. This had to be done before the deck goes on. Then I made the motor stringers and laid CF on the bottom of the motor compartment. Motor stringers and ribs are half notched so the form a strong box once put together. Next step is to epoxy the running pads and the corner strakes on the bottom. Running pads are cut at 13° and are 32mm wide. So, as you can see, I am serious now to finish my cat as soon as possible. Harold and the other guys with their builds have turned me on :). Now, where is Steve Marshal from down under with his 48" cat?
Next step is the deck, which is already cut out and glued together. More pictures to come.

Looks good mate, your one looks alot better than mine. Mine is still on the jig and on a go slow. Are you going to run the pipe inside the hull??.

I am going to run my pipe partially inside. I am using a 90° header and going to exit the pipe in an angle slightly pointing upwards. I will show you in upcoming pictures. I also need to put an end muffler on my pipe to quite it down some. There is no way to hide the entire exhaust inside the hull. But that's O.K. since the cat is only 48" long.

Hi Alex,

You guys run very different pipes in the US then we here in Europe. here all muflers are integrated because of noise limits.
I have a 90degree header and pipe just fits in the sponson, WTS will leave you much more room, but your Cat is much smaller..
In your case I would go for a 105 header and stick it out the back.
WTS in the sponson might be an option if you use a pipe without mufler, else I think 105 header will look better.

I have been out to the shed for a drink and think, and I recon the pipe will go in the LH sponson real well. i think I will need a header with a 2-3 in first part and that will make the pipe further forward. i dont think the wrap to centre will work too well. I didn't have a motor to sit in there. The pipe is a cheepy ali 1in band.

WTS, is a Wrap To Side, or wrap forward or DeepVee header, all the same header as you discribe ;)
WTC is Wrap To Centre.. Wrap to Centre is usually to long also.
If you get the WTS header from ebay or almost any other premade, they are to long also. I had to shorten mine 3cm to get it at 33-34cm total length.

Did I say 90° header?[sm=50_50.gif]. I was wrong, I meant a 105° header, of course, like you mentioned, Marcel. As soon as I have the deck on I place the motor inside and take a picture. I could also do it like Steve shows it in his post, but I need to stick an end muffler on and that wouldn't look good.

After another short interruption (road trip) I countinued with adding the strakes and running pads to the sponsons. I soften the poplar wood pads in steam to pre-form the curves, as you can see in the picture. That helped a lot with glueing the pads on to the bottom. You wouldn't be able to bend the tight curve otherwise. I also tapered the front pads on my belt sander before I glue it on. I used white wood glue for this job. It's stronger than epoxy. Next step are the fillets in all inside corners. This will be done with epoxy filled with microbaloon and a dash of milled fibers. Next set of pictures to follow soon (I hope).

Here is my next update: Got all the fillets done. Before I put the deck on I cut out three Naca ducts. I didn't make any molds for that, just bent the cut out ply down and glued balsa on the inside. Came out alright. Deck is fitted and almost ready for glueing. But before I do that I need to make a cradle for the tank.

Them nacaducts turned out very good doing it that way, good idea I never even thought about doing it that way, the cat is looking good.

Yes you can just download the file at 100% and when you have it reproduced have them scale it to the size you want.....
Those Ducts are way easier than what I did...... You just saved 3 days of making molds and parts....... great idea....:D
