I personally know the designer of the boat and have seen them run at races, and a friend up the Street that owns one.
It is a very competitive hull when set up properly. Some of the Die-cutting in the kit is below par along with some of the wood so expect to make some replacement parts from better quality wood.
Fast? They've been known to run around 60-70 MPH in race trim.
Honestly though, for a beginner boater like yourself, hold off for a few years before moving up to a boat such as this.
Yes, it is a kit with the hull only. Everything else you have to buy separately.

When you buy the Dumas Hawk, you buy a box of die-cut wood, some minor hardware and instructions, that's about it. When you get around to buying one, your best bet is to call the designer, Gary Preusse yourself. He can sell you absolutely everything that you need to build the boat, OK, maybe not paint and glue, but the correct hardware, engine, radio system, etc. that is needed.
