Default Question..on a simple Mod for the hammer

All,

I was reading the manual ...and it states that a simple Mod to the hammer is cutting a 1 inch hole over the Engine in order
to permit better breathing..or Air function. My questions are the following:

This is a Fiberglass hull. What type of Tool would I use to cut the hole ? Secondly...My LHS advised that this allows water to
permeate...he suggested to put a piece of mesh screen to prevent water...Any Idea on this ? What type should I use and
where to get it ?

3rdly...why wouldn't a scoop be a better cover ? or that combined with mesh ?

on a side note ...if I buy a mack pipe ...would have to cut it to fit it and what tool would be use fore
this ?

Thanks again to all for the assistance...

Regards,

You can use a hole cutting saw that attaches to a drill. Cover the area where you're going to cut with masking tape, it helps to keep the gel-coat and fiberglass from cracking and/or chipping.
If you feel the need to put a screen over the hole, you can use a piece of window screen. You can use something like Goop or Shoo-Goo to hold it in place.
Another quick tip. Cover the boat stand where it meets the hull with some foam. Pipe insulation works great and you can get a 6-8 foot piece for around $1.00 . This will help to keep the hull from getting cracks in it from pull-starting the engine.

My suggestion is that you dont put the hole right above the carby. A friend did this on his hammer and sometime water coming over the bow will drop into the engine causing a flame out. I did not do this on my hammer and it actually is faster than my friends so I'm not sure how much difference it will make.

Grant Ed,

So is your hammer completely stock...or did you do other Mods ????

One question ...my hammer has a small crack in the prop...would this hinder performance ???

Thanks in advance,

Replace the prop. This has been an ongoing problem with the Nitro Hammers. The problem comes from them having it already installed on the boat out of the box and is easily damaged in transport.

Some replace it with the Octura X-432 or X-435. We messed around with one once during one of our Fun Runs and it barely turned some larger ones. An M-535/3 might work also.

Octura makes them but doesn't have a web site. Old Tom is still in the Stone Age.
You can try these sites though:
http://www.finedesignrc.com/
http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/MainPage.htm
These are two that I found somewhat close to you.

Ron,

Thanks a bunch ..I will definitly be checking both of them out. Unfortunately even the Middletown , NY is too far from me to go check. I sent them an e-mail to get things going.

I am still confused on whether I should cut a hole over the motor as it states in the manual for
better breathing. RCBM has a review where they did the Mod and it actually picked up more
speed. HMMM.

What happens with the mod is that you are drawing in cooler air than what you would with the air coming in from the rear of the hatch. There it's picking up all of the heat from the engine and exhaust system. It will also totally mess up your carb settings once the hot air is being drawn into the carb. This is why there are hood scoops on cars like the old Ram Air and cowl induction systems and why they now have hoses running up in front of the radiators to the filter and fuel system.
How you do it is up to you. Rick Eyrich in RCBM cut a series of slots over his carb, a much cleaner way to do it than a big hole in the hatch.

He may have drilled the holes on the ends then used a Dremel with a cutting wheel to make the slots. It's harder than it sounds, I found out last winter when putting slots on the cowl of my Sport 40 but it does look better.

Just regular masking tape, nothing special.
If you're looking for a scoop of some kind and want one lightweight, an airplane canopy can be cut to look like one or use you imagination of plastic bottles that are around your house. I just took a quick look around and dish washing soap bottles, shampoo or aspirin bottles have some shapes that could make some cool looking ones once trimmed.
