Radar or GPS
Im in the market for either a GPS or a Radar gun. I know WW uses the Bushnell gun and several other people including myself use a GPS. From all of your experience, what is preferable as far as accuracy or is it 6 to 1 half dozen to the other?
Thanks

RE: Radar or GPS
gps is a lot more accurate, radar guns need to be pointing at the boat running right at it (and you) to be accurate, but GPS's dont, ad their more accurte anyway

Just a comment from a newb...but if the purpose of using either device is to figure out what your max speed is, would you want to add a dozen oz to your boat to do it? I guess I am trying to say that wouldn't adding the weight of the GPS slow your boat down?

RE: Radar or GPS
soem gps's arent too heavy, and it depends on the size of your boat...like if your using a .09 size rigger, a gps is out of the question....what boat are you using??
i think there is a gps watch that weighs a little over 1oz...dotn know where it is, but its pretty cool

RE: Radar or GPS
hey guys,
I have a few boats that I would like to use it in. A couple are 3.5 tunnels and the one that I have used one in, was in my gas cat. I was just wondering what was more accurate in terms of calculating speed.

RE: Radar or GPS
I've placed a GPS in a 3.5 tunnel, did not seem to lose speed at all. The fuel cell holds 6 oz of fuel, when the boat burns half of that, the GPS + 1/2 a tank of fuel is equal to the total weight of the boat without the GPS and a full tank of fuel.
Just a thought

RE: Radar or GPS
since i got a radar gun i'm craving to get a gps for the reasons of: 1) it's really hard and risky to radar the speedy boat if ur alone(..have a bad crash onetime)..2) radar gun round off the speed to nearest tenth compare to gps indicate the speed to decimal point meaning more accurate, 3)accuracy in radar gun depends on the angulation when getting the speed, the bigger the angle the less accurate, gps accuracy depends on the setting correspond to the position to the satellite. 4)though radar gun is more easy to use in smaller boat or rc car. 5) gps can measure the speed wether the boat is close to u or far unlike radar gun needs to be close.
