Default Looking for a boat to build.

I was on line trying to find a hydro kit, I would like to build a fast boat. I was thinking about buying a pro boat hull 1/8 size and go from there, $400 just for the hull. I saw the video on the one post with all the boats racing, were do you get plans or kits? What is best for building wood, plastic, fiberglass any tips would be great.

proboats hulls arent very good, usually weak and wont survive anying more than the setup they were intended to use...

i think buying an emptey hull would be better, but if you want to build, i havent seen too many hydroplane kits and i forgot where they are.

check out finedesignrc.com they have a bunch of hulls from different companies....

I agree, build one. Can't go wrong wth one of Roger Newton's plans either. If you plan on racing IMPBA, don't get the Proboat. My understanding it's not legal to run 1/8 scale.

Dumas boats, still carries some 8th scale model hydro kits,at (www.dumasestore.com),,,If you have never built a hydro before ,I would go this route, Not Roger Newton prints for a first time build, they can be a little tricky (but they come out really nice if you have some hydroplain build knowledge under your belt).Dumas carries smaller hydros in a sport 40 & sport 20 type hull, and there is Brian Blazer of (www.blazermarine.com)he carries some sport series hulls,

Newton's plans aren't all that bad for a beginner, as long as the beginner sticks to a boat similar to what I'm building in the thread. Jumping in on a modern turbine is asking for trouble as you have a lot more to fine tune than on an earlier pickleforks like one of the Pay N Pak or Atlas Van Lines hulls.

Dumas still has a couple of 1/8th scale boats, but they are very heavy and not too well balanced by modern competitive standards. They require all the internal framing to be replaced (for starters) just to get the weight down to a reasonable level.

What can I say about the Pro Boat hulls that hasn't been said? Poor quality in workmanship, thin layups, cheaply made hardware and balance that's so far off that the boat is prone to blowing over without major reworking. I can build a Newton hull for a lot less and have a better hull than anything Pro Boat sells.

I second Hydrojunkie On the proboat hull!! For the 300 or 400 for a bare proboat hull if your looking for gas hydros there are plenty of bare hulls in the same price range that will eat a modified proboat for lunch.........Plus by the time you bought all the stuff for it you might as well have bought a new one..might even be cheaper!

How long did it take you to build that cool boat, and how many times did you have to start over?
For your first build about how long to get rr done?

The one boat plan at dumasestore.com that looks like yours calls for a .67 engine, that is big don't you think?

My boat is a sport 20, not a scale hydro, its only 30 in long(.21)motor, a scale boat is a round 40 to 44 in long(.67) motor. what are you more interested in, and is this your 1st boat,

miss circus and yes this would be my first build. I have a miss llumar 1/12 and that is a toy to the miss circus.I think I'm ready to move on to a good boat. I was going to buy the miss vegas but I would only wish I took a shot at the self build boats. I like the look of the 1/8 scale.

I don't know about spending $360 for that Circus Circus kit for a first build. Especially having to make lots of modifications and having to replace all the framing. Under the "Discounted Kits" area, Dumas also has the following, which might be better choises:
Kit 1321 1982/83 Atlas Van Lines 1/8 $110
Kit 1322 1985-87 Miller American 1/8 $160
Kit 1329 Eagle Sport 40 hydroplane $85
Kit 1312 1976 Atlas Van Lines Sport 40 $66
Kit 1314 1977 Atlas Van Lines Sport 40 $63

As I said above, the internal framing needs to be replaced with aircraft grade plywood and lightening holes need to be cut out to lighten the boats up. Also, on the two Sport 40 Atlas boats, the hulls need to be widened across the tunnel by around one inch to make them more stable in the corners. There are some other changes that need to be made as well in all the Dumas boats. Above all, if you choose to go this route, DON'T USE DUMAS HARDWARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Let me give you an idea of what you're looking at. Here are some pictures of a Sport 40 Pay' N Pak started from Newton plans that were scaled down to 36" in length

I'm going to buy the atlas one for $110 and go from there. I hope I can pick your brain for good info on the build? I think my wife is going to kill me for all the RC stuff I'm buying. Life can't be all work and no play.

Back to basics and lets start from where you are with boat building experience. How much building experience do you have. I don't mean assembling plastic toys, but building a wooden boat. If the answer is none, then a scale hydro is not where you want to start. It's a complex build with a lot of attention needed to build the boat straight, strong and light with the proper materials and adhesives. Why not start with a small .21 powered mono hull like a Wild Thing. Not slow by any means and it will get you familiar with some of the techniques you'll use in building a larger boat. I'm not trying to burst your bubble but I sense that you are jumping in with both feet when you should be treading slowly. Scale Hydros are beatuiful boats when done properly and by all means they are the class of R/C Model boating but NOT for beginners.

I know what you'r saying, but I have very good mechanical skills. I'm a auto tech by trade and also do autobody work. I know it won't be easy for my first time. If I'm going to spend a lot of money I'm not going to rush it, I will take my time, I'm in no rush this is fun for me. I want to upgrade my proboat with a better engine, but I want that ready for May. If it takes six months for the build so be it, I won't care.
