Default Glow plug questions!

Ok what cause glow plugs the colapses![:@] I'd put a new pistion and cyclender set in my thundertiger.[8D]It ran great last night ideling. But today I was going to run it and it start missing and quit running in 2 seconds[:@].took the boat home and found out two things!![X(] One the pistion and cyclender set is for a team pro.21.I'd thought that thundertiger made motors for team accociate? The team cyclender in the intake is small and the thundertiger is bigger,So I'd put my old cyclender back in,but left the new pistion in.Two the glow plus was colapsed, changed it out too![:@]fired it up,has great compression! runs and sound great,But have to run it tomarrow and see if the change make any differents on power and rpms!!

I am not sure how this works with the engine you have but the OS engines have sleeve's and pistons as a pair. I tried running a piston in a different sleeve and it was way to tight to run like this, also I would say your head clearance isn't enough (real rich for me means my plug looks brand new after a run).

When you say collapsed you mean the coil is pushed in?

Yes coil pushed in![:@] Gooycheese,I tryied the pistion%cyclender set before and my boat poped and snapped and it blew out glow plugs! So I'd had an old set of pistion and cyclender set and threw it in and she ran!! I'd look at the team pro.21 cyclender and the tiger pro.21 and theres alittle differents,The intake is bigger on the tiger motor and the team one was smaller. The pistion looks the same with the same notch out too.It fits nicely. The way I'd read and told that thundertiger make team accociates motor for them?[&:] It this dont work I'll put the old pistion &cyclender set back into the motor!![8D] I'd should stuck with an old saying,If it not broken dont fix it!![8D]

I find too rich and/or too much compression pushes the coil element further in to the plug.

MissHydro,

did you remove the head shims or are they still in?

Did you say that you had a different head button that came with your engine or you fitted a different one?

either you are too rich or the pipe is giving too much back pressure, or your squish band is out to lunch.

some times head buttons are modified, one for low nitro and one for high nitro.

Check your Squish band, remove head button, bring piston to TDC. with your caliper measure the distance of the piston (at TDC) to the top of your cylinder (write down the measurement).

now measure your head button (the part that goes inside the cylinder, remove the shims if you have some) write the measurement down.

Now lets do the math, lets take for example your first reading was .062" and the second was .041"

.062-.041= .021" squish band.

Squish band is normally between .016 to .022" (for Bigger engine over 7.5cc).

if you are between those numbers, no shims are required**

This is at the upper end of the squash band width and the lower end of the compression spectrum. **This setting may vary depending on Nitro content used, exhaust system and air density.

Ummm Dan those numbers .016-.022 look like numbers for a .67 engine or larger? My .45 is at .011-.012 my .12 is at .008 . I have heard that alot of the more race type .21's are at .006 . I am no expert but for a .21 I would be shooting for a .010 or less and if I am compressing elements then I would try adding more shims. There are alot of people here that have a lot more knowledge of this than I do, I am just repeating what I was told.

ooops,

your right Paul, I forgot to say that those numbers are an example and not engine specific.

Here's something a bit more specific, My .21 CMB LS Green head squish band is .009" and if I use my other head button I have .007".

Hey Paul, on my OS XM21 OB, I run .002-.003 clearance......... I belive this is what yoru talking about, not squish band....... The squish band is the band around the outside of the "bowl" on the head button. Clearnace is the ditance between the piston at TDC (top dead center) and the head button. Hope this helps......

This might help clarify things up.

Dan, I get what you are saying now. Im reffering to the actual band as the squish band, and the head clearance, or as they refer there, the "sqaush".

I'd used the same head buttom.I'd cut off the airfins off the head and filed it flat so the head botton can fit. Yes I'd left the head shim in it too.Squish band?Is that the head shim?

squish band and head clearance as far as i know are the same thing, it is important. Dan posted a link to check this.

Squish band is the flat tapered area of a head chamber where the gasses get pushed up into the center bubble. High nitro head buttons have less area there than low nitro ones, and a sharper taper. KB calls this the squash band.

We always refered to what KB calls the squish band is the head clearance between the bottom of the head and the top of the piston.

here what I'd did on the head, cut off the air fins off the thundertiger head.then add the water cool head.here's the pics, but I'd did put the small tiger water cool botton on and taken in the sides of the head botton.
