The stock pipe is baffled, and should be quieter than any unmuffled tuned pipe.

The muffler you are listing above sounds like it is made to be screwed onto something (since it it talking about thread sizes). I have tried to find a silencer that would fit in the middle of the rubber hose on the MV, and have not had any luck yet. Cooper makes a ball silencer, but I have not purchased one to see if it would fit yet.

Steely - I agree. The vegas is LOUD!!!! I was running the other day with my brother. He has a Nitro Vee with a .32 OS stuffed into it. He was running about the same speed as my Vegas and he was only at IDLE! Definitely too much motor for the boat....but when my boat shut down, you couldn't even hear his boat! He's running low R's with a HUGE prop. I wonder if we could do the same with our hydros?? Low R's, big prop. It would definitely be appreciated by the neighbors!

Here's a suggestion. Replace the stock MV muffler with an 18 truck muffler/pipe. I used a truck muffler/pipe when I tested an O.S. 18 TZ Turbo in a Miss Vegas and it greatly reduced the sound level. Tower has lots of 18 truck muffler/pipes. You need to make a mounting bracket to attach the muffler to the bottom of the boat and cut a hole in the top of the cowling for the exhaust. An exhaust extension will get the exhaust clear of the cowling. Then just plug the hole in the transom where the exhaust exited.

I'm still waiting for the rumored 2 pipes to come out which are supposed to be quieter. I can't name the manufacturers yet.
I did do a trick on a MAC 2.5 pipe that really made it quieter and didn't seem to lose any power. I drilled out the stinger slightly and inserted a piece of brass tubing as far as the fat part of the pipe (in laymans terms) and held it in place with some JB Weld.
Next I've got one that I'm going to try for the Mac pipe. I've got everything but haven't put it together yet. It's going to be slick!

I guess they are saying if you take enough of those pills it wont sound so loud any more. I got word the other day from a manufacturer that they too had a quiet pipe for the .18 that they are working on. Said it would be about 4 to 5 weeks. That was a couple of weeks ago. I'll let you guys know as soon as I hear something new.

My Vegas was too loud and I put this muffler on from Rum Racing Products

http://www.rumracingproducts.com/

The outlet of my Macs 2.5 pipe is .385, and the muffler inlet is .421, so I wound up a piece of .016 shim stock and clamped in place. It works really well and made a huge difference in the sound. Took the bark out of it - much quieter.

Looks good G! How significant was the power loss?

Here is an interesting idea from somebody on the web....for a gas engine though

No power loss as far as I can tell - the muffler bore is straight through (you can see right through). There is a pipe through the muffler with a bunch of holes that open into the can. I guess the idea is to reduce the pressure of the exhaust as it passes through the muffler. I'm no accoustic engineer, but I suspect that the muffler is most effective for a specific frequency. It may not attenuate frequencies above or below its design range. Anyway, it works for my little OS 18 CVR.

It tucked right in behind the pipe too, and I just ran a short piece of the silicone tubing out the back of the boat.

I did this to my Vegas a few months ago, it was a silencer from an old gas boat I had sitting on the shelf. I barely fit in the hull but it did fit with only having to cut the exhaust extention tubing and placing a small ring of it on the end of the tuned pipe ( Mac 3.5 ) to hold it in the stock mounting block in the boat.
I ran it once, it was so quiet that it made it sound almost like an electric so I took it off ! ( plus the never-ending jokes about having a beer can in my boat ! )
As far as peformance goes, I never really tested it a whole lot to see if it changed, but it was very quiet.
