Default UK build skunkworks nitro cat.

Hey Folks,
Finally won my cat hull off ebay last night (early hours of the morning, lol) My girlfriend is buying it for me for christmas
Also a couple of weeks ago won some top secret hardware, although this will be a slow build as Im a bit of noob to all this and have just bought a flat that needs decorating Its great that we have Waynes build to give me help along the way, but thought I would put up a thread also for a little extra too! and thought it would be cool
to be able to compare builds.

Am going to be ordering soon also :

HF88 3/16" ( 4.87mm) lead teflon bushes. 1/4" od. ( 6.35mm) .4 pieces.
HF82A Brass tube for 3/16" for 25" flexi. 1/4" o.d. thin wall standard stuffing tube.
HF80 3/16" drive dog
HF191 Flexhex steel collet engine coupling. 1/4 unf (1/4-28) for 3/16" flexishaft. Suitable for all .21 engines and most .40 and .45 engines.
HF9 Spare flexi-shaft. 3/16", 25" - 625mm long.
SC46 SC46 Marine. 7.5cc nitro sport engine. ABC piston/cylinder, Ball-bearing crankshaft, metering carb for good throttling. Watercooled with flywheel. Powerful, reliable sport engine..
10588 Steel manifold for SC40, SC46. ASP 40 and many other nitro enines

From http://www.prestwich.ndirect.co.uk/ Does ^ that sound about right, nothing really obvious missing of that list ??
apart from engine mount, pipe, radio gear etc. Ive got a octura X437/3 wich I'll probably try out on it first, but there is along way to go
before it touches any H2o !

Thanks for reading, any advice or comments appreciated, happy boating all.

Sam.

Looking good there!!! I guess we will be starting our builds close to the same time. Ive stalled a little with my Skunk Cat project because of work, moving an wating for that darn motor. I like the bits they look top notch Im sure itll be a great runner (at least I hope cause that'll mean mine will too [8D]) Let me know if you need any advise its been a good trial an error slow setup for me as since a I wanted it to be ridiculus standards in regard to flex an vibration. The hulls are very sturdy an light to begin with so you should have no problem fabbing up a transom support an engine rails. Good job an take lots of pics of the build!

Thanks guys its great to have your comments onboard.

Wayne I may need to ask you for further details on how the CF rod is arranged inside the hull, although your pics are great Im used to working from a drawing
and cant quite grasp where/how far up in they go yet, will study your pics further though. I will strive for the same amount of longevity as you from our cat's !
never done any epoxy work, but like a good challenge and there is loads of info on this site's search!
Got to love ebay for a good bargain havent you yep will take lots of pics definately, may even have to break out the 'ol tripod, lol.

Cheers
Sam.

Alright , Just won stuffing tube, lead bushes, quiet engine mount, flexishaft and drive dog all for £30
..and a OS max rx .40 for the same amount, lol!
Got a 12oz sullivan coming from japan, only need a few more bits and pieces and I can (in the words of..) " slap this puppy together"
Also really impressed with the quality of the Top secret hardware I received wich was about £25, mmmm shiny
So far, not too much of an expense, wich is always good [8D]

still need prop, radio gear and box, tuned pipe, water cool and fuel lines, and probably some autobailers?

Will get some proper pics up together, when I start dry assembling things I guess.

Cheers for answering my questions in the other topics too[sm=thumbs_up.gif]

P.s- suspect they maybe a few more before the years out !

http://www.osengines.com/engines/boat.html

If you have a look on this web site and mooch about in the accessories section you might find your engine header listed. You are correct in as much as it is a long 180 deg bend to bring it round to point aft.

Not sure where you can get one in the UK, someone will have one. If you get stuck, PM or email me and I will put you in touch with someone who will make you one.

Where are you planning to run the boat at?

Hi Glenn, ta for the link! Im hoping I can use the pipe benders/swagers at work and construct a 'U' in alloy or mild steel pipe, but if I do get stuck..

Will be running down the beach mostly (Hayling island, nr portsmouth) when the sea is alot calmer though and maybe at a local pond wich is a nice spot

Might work, I think, but not 100%, that the "proper" OS pipe has a watercooled flange on it and also has the double O ring method to fit it to the motor, similar to the CMB method.

Bear in mind when making the pipe up that you need to be able to achieve the correct tuned length with the pipe you select. If you can get hold of some, thin walled stainless will be a better header material than carbon steel, in saying that, it will prove challenging to bend though.

Yipee! The bolt hole centres on that^ header and the bolt hole centres on the motor exhaust flange are almost indentical
It's got to be a worth a punt I recon to try and mate them up, even if the exhaust flange adapter has to come of the engine,
or I need to 'tickle' things somewhat[sm=tongue_smile.gif]
May aswell order the pipe up at the same time!

Anyways here's some more pics to enjoy

I have the strangest feeling that you are going to end up with a little rocket there. It looks fast in yuor photo's!

I still have a passion for Nitro boats, something about the noise and smell I think.

Enjoy the build, and running it of course.

That's cool as I do like fast[sm=shades_smile.gif]

Yep the Nitro boat experience has got me for sure!

Thanks, will do, still a few things im unsure of for the build in my mind, but hopefully can resolve them with a bit of 'Great British thinking' and then theirs the practice of course, lol.

Most of the boat/build's on here seem to have rails etc. so will have to overcome that for radio box install, although I have spotted some nice C/F angle on ebay!

..and then there's the decal/paint side of things, either going to be a plain white Cat. or a completely stickered up crazy paint job Cat.[sm=red_smile.gif]

Anyway wishing anyone reading a very happy festive period and prosperous 2008!

Regards
Sam. [sm=teeth_smile.gif]

Just built the obligatory stand for her this morning !

From what I've been reading, I've been putting into practice - center of strut inline with bottom of the sponsons (with room for adjustment up), and rudder inline with inside of sponson, sounds like a good starting point to me!

cardboard box inside boat is to represent radio box, its the right height and depth but not length, but atleast gives me an idea for servo position etc.
and the pipe is a little on the small side, but again just for reference really.

Next job is to build the motor mount up and then figure a balance point for her once the tank and header arrive from across the pond

Oh, and I couldnt resist a cheeky photoshop also[8D]

Hi there,

just looking at the photo, is there no way to get the motor downa bit lower? Or does the hump in the hatch cover the motor OK?

That drivers compartment in the hatch should cover the engine well. Seeing how you have the mount and engine it should be easy to find out but from your side shot I don't see a problem.

Hi,

I dry mounted the engine as low as poss. just enough room to get a belt under the flywheel,

If I mount the engine so the drivers hatch covers the engine ( wich it does then wont this be to near to the transon
(and mess with the GoG?!),
as you can see by the pictures below , its very close to the pre-made hole in the freeboard for the stuffing tube

Cheers

Sam,
Good to see everything is coming along well with the build!!!
Ive had several conversations with the fella that makes these hulls an the optimum CoG he has found is right at 33% I have the measurements somewhere at home so I'll check it out for you. I had a .45 ready to drop in but since moving, getting married an a plethora of other nuiances including never recieving the motor[:@] I had intended to use Im going with a brushless system. Its just easier for me to maintain since Im in a shoeboxed size apartment. But with my original settings had called for a small hole (about the dia. of the head) to be cut out directly in front of the canopy. The weight of motor an fuel ended to make her arse heavy otherwise. I have at least a general measurement from the transom forward that I got from using a friends OS .45 to get approx. CoGs while I was waiting for the motor. So they should be a good starting point for you. Will have em later tonight. Good luck with the build an if you need any answers just let me know since I had her almost ready to get wet when I decided to switch. An if you happen to need an bits to finish let me know by PM as I have a box full of aeromarine stuff that wont be needed in an FE setup.

Im going to be starting on a transom support soon, do I need to make it the full width and height of the transom or just a small section in relation
to where the strut and rudder affix ?

Cheers!
