Default Tunnels as part of Hydro Build Challenge?

I split this out so it wouldn't clutter up Hydro Junkie's hydro build challenge thread, but hopefully the results will be used for his challenge.

I'm looking for people who are interested in the challenge, but would like to build a tunnel instead of a sport hydro. How many are interested in building wood tunnels? If you were going to build a tunnel, would you do it from a Dumas kit, some other kit, or from plans?

Personally, I plan to build a WOF tunnel this winter to replace my TS2.

I have built most of the dumas wood tunnels . So if I was to build another wood tunnel it would be from another company or from my own design ! Most of the tunnels I run now are fiberglass and abs . (less build time and more run time!!)

I am building a FireFighter .21 this winter. But for this challenge, I am not really sure. I would say Yes, but it would be nice if this challenge had atleast 2 boats of each type. So on that note I would be willing to build my FF.21 in this challenge if someone else wanted to build a rigger. The only boat that I feel would be tough to build and be ready to run next race season would be a scale build ( way to much detail involved, Ive heard just an open engine will take months to build correctly). Just my opinion

Paul

p.s. Is there any sorta time limit on this build challenge, like ready to race next season?

I want to participate in the challenge an think a tunnel would be a great choice for me but then again I do like the cheepie hydro but dumas makes a cheapie tunnel also I could use, modify an power with parts I have lying around since christmas is coming an here for most people that I know the economy in FLA is near rock bottom. hard to make a living if nobody can afford the jewelery that I sell an I sell it cheap ya'll! If an I say if riggers were included I'd even do a dumas like the Quickie 40 Kit #1316 just for nostalgia wouldnt care about speed just making it look like a killer. would also consider the Pay'n Pak Kit #1310 for the hydro aspect But if it came down to it Id do an inboard old school Hot Shot IV Kit #1320 no outboards on this one but make her sweet!

Why not a sport hydro build AND a tunnel build?

Main problem I see...is if this is to be judged, it would be harder to judge if you have folks building different designs.

As said in my proposed rules, if enough interest is shown, tunnels from other sources than Dumas could be added. I just used Dumas as a starting point for the hydros to make it easier for the first time builders to get involved.

Is this just like a photo/video contest? Is this a documented build or can it be setup already? I would be interested if it were fibreglass tunnels? I recently built the wood Dumas Hot Shot Sprint and the wood Amsterdam tug and I need a rest from swearing and glue and pins, pegs, vices etc.
What about a HM Skater tunnel, .45 size, but it will be a big 8s electric setup? I'd planned on starting end of year.

Thanks
Peter

I say yes to this!! There hydros too plus the riggers and maybe the cats too. Unless we should have different class of hydro builds??[&:] Hay it's an idea!! If there three points of touch then there should be in the builds.

I'll try to answer a few questions, but first I'll remind everyone that this thread is specifically about tunnels. Questions about the details of the contest or other boat types should go in the contest thread so they're not lost.

I think HJ's idea is good. He wanted to have a contest where people started with a pile of wood, in kit form or otherwise, and at the end produced a boat. While many of us certainly run glass hulled boats, starting from one does not entail anywhere near the craftsmanship that comes from building something from wood.

From the poll votes so far it looks like there is some interest in building wood tunnels from something other than Dumas kits. It's HJ's contest, so he can decide what to do with this input.

Oh please, don't even get him started One never knows what he will come up with.

As I stated in the HJ's thread, I'll be building mutiple WOF boats this winter. All need to be done before the 2008 World Outboard Tunnel Champs. Few will be raced, few will be raffled off, few will be sold...

I'm in for a WOF tunnel build.[sm=thumbup.gif] I already have three somewhat started.[sm=biggrin.gif][sm=biggrin.gif] But I would start another one if needed for the contest.

Looks like HJ has updated the contest to include scratch/plans built tunnels, so we're good to go.

Jul, plan as of now is to build about five 29" ( I need one, few have been spoken for already), three 34" for the 7.5 boats. Lastly, either one or two 47" for gas tunnel!

I have two sets of JD's plans on softcopy. The 28/30 is small enough to send in email. The 34" plans are very large, 50 mb each sheet, and will need to be sent on disc.

Oh yea, don't bother asking JD for plans.. He just sends the requester my way

Actually, I do have plans for the JD WOF 34 and plans for a 1/4 Scale Kneel Down Hydro for a 20 OB.

Thanks for the Reply guys. I'm looking to make a tunnel with an electric motor since the pond I will be playing around on is in a neighbor hood that I will be moving into. I don't want to piss of the neighbors too soon. Jerry thats cool that you are making 1/4 scale hydros. My Dad and I have been taking his old race boat plans and scaling them down to 1/8 for models.

If you could recommend which tunnel would be good for an electric motor that would be great. I want to get started in this hobby to keep me out of trouble..

The JD WOF 28/30 makes a good FE tunnel. It currently holds the NAMBA record for SAW in FE Tunnel Class.
