you can get a fair idea of hull size to engine size ratios from the manufactures such as
[link]http://www.aeromarinerc.com/[/link]
[link]http://www.seaducerboats.com/boats.htm[/link]
Most suppliers/manufactures websites list the preferred engine sizes for their hulls.

Awesome, thanks
What RPM are these big motors turning on the topend?

Jonjoe, It's quite possible that the engine manufacturers see the writing on the wall and note that the gasoline powered two strokes are favored over the nitro burners. A .61 or a .90 worth racing will cost as much or more than a gas burner. The gas engines will be far less finicky and more reliable. At our District 11 races we don't even have nitro classes above the .21 size. 99% of the classes are Stock and Mod Zenoah 26's.

Srt10, based on the straightaway and oval records posted on the NAMBA web site I would have to say that the nitro engines have an edge on speed when you compare comparable sized boats in similar classes. The C and X hydro Nitro straightaway records are in the 120's while the G1 and G2 hydro gas engine powered boats are hanging around 100 mph. Keep in mind that if Nitro is king in your area then that's the way you should go if you are interested in racing. If gas is more popular then go with gas. As I said, in New England, gas is definately more popular. The bigger nitro boats stay home. Also consider the cost of fuel if you run a lot. The nitro speedsters are probably running in excess of 50% nitro at $30 to $40 per gallon. Gasoline isn't there yet. Glow plugs are not cheap either.

Plus I can run about 30min on a tank of gas, for about a buck... I've got a 55" hull (cat) with no motor, thought about going brushless, but my run time would be only 3-5min! then charge for about an hour.. But nitro does put out alot of power!

If I were spending your money I'd buy you a stock Zenoah 260. It would not be a barn burner but would make your 55" cat get along nicely. Once you got bored with that speed I'd have it modified and really turn that boat on. I can't imagine an electric setup pushing a 55" cat very well unless you spend your retirement funds on a really big system.

My personal position; I dislike the sound of electric in any type model. Not to mention the hastle with batteries. Especially proper care and charging LiPoly's. I've heard to may stories about fires resulting from improper charging or failures of Li Poly charging systems. I race boats and fly prop and jet powered planes and to be honest, electric turns me off. I long for the sound and smell of a turbine and the roar of a strong recip.

With you there John,

Internal combustion engines have the edge, it just sounds right.

There is a guy in the club I'm in who claims to have 71 boats. He brings a trailer-load to each club day. Some of his fastest boats are nitro but his petrol boats aren't slouches either.
He has a twin rigger that does over 134km/h and sounds absolutely awesome. That's twin CMB 1.01's something like shown [link=http://www.hobbysupplies.com.au/CMB%20Engines.HTM]here[/link].
Now he's building a cat with twin CMB 35RS's. That's 20hp !!!
I can't wait to see that one go.

the CMB .67 to the 1.01 will turn anywhere between 25,500 to 27,500.

Also the the gas engines are heavy compared to nitros but in the case of a big cat hull it might be better to run a zen. I think that market has a ways to go with getting more power out of those wacker engines as in thru the crankcase breathing with large transfer ports and a large barrel valve, HEY maybe a neet winter project for me!!!!!!!!!! ps that cmb gasser looks real nice but she has nice price tag to go with her.
