the progress of my shockwave strip and repaint
Hey everyone thought I would make a new post instead of having a bunch of others in different locations. What have and been doing is, stripping all of the old paint of a shockwave, sand it all down, fill in the rough spots, sand more, prime, wet sand, now the white basecoat. Soon to come next will be the top part of the hull being a Sunset Orange Metallic. Same color as the hard to find SOM Pontiac Firehawk. Very nice color in my eyes. Let me know what you think of my progess.
This is also my very frist time doing a paint job with a spray gun other than rattle cans, not including the priming i did. Any tips to help me out would be cool too! Like how to set the boat up to paint top and bottom other than hanging it by string lol.
the very bad previous paint job
over spray everywhere
lots and lots of cracks
very rough bottom
overspray on the hardware
and the paint stripper, the really brown stuff was bad old stock that didnt work the light greenish color was fresh and worked great.
sanded down now
filled in with white putty
after sanding already primed
white basecoat down

I'm just hoping that you're going to replace the flex cable during the rebuild, that baby is shot!

so what is a good way to hold the boat for painting other than hanging it from the stringers?

Looks good. Ihave I just picked up that Ihave to redo as the the fuel was leaking and blistered the gel coat on the bottom and can see through in light now ( can see the cloth) but not all the way through that Ineed to fix. I'm going to redo the whole thing this winter as Ipicked up just a hull with hardware before getting this one. Trying to decide if I want to gelcoat the area or the whole bottom of the hull. But so far can only find gel coat in quarts for around 25 and not sure if it is worth it for just a small repair area.

i was going to gel coat the whole boat but after lookin into it more the cost was going to be crazy. that and i would of needed to mix it with something else or they said it would stay tacky and i really didnt want to mess with all that.

That is what I was thinking. Iwas thinking of seeing if I could just sand down that one area and put some resin there, then sanding the rest of the hull enough for the paint to stick and do it that way so I'll still have most of the gelcoat there. I'm also going to fix the inside and put in some more resin and cloth in the tank and motor area. Good thing Ipicked up that Hull in Macomb (actually picked it up first)so Ican switch things over to take to Caseville this weekend. Plus I only see it running at the most a couple times a month if that during summer time.

Dude you have done a VERY VERY nice job....And I hate it to when the only gnat for 10 miles flys all the way over just to land in the fresh paint..It ALLWAYS happens so I have a pair of sharp nosed tweezers about 10 inches long that keep in my back pocket when im painting to dig the SOB'S out...your dust and dirt in the clear can be wet sanded out with 1000 grit and then buffed with coarse compound then mild compound and finaly some good swirl remover and glaze and itll look 5 miles deep...and I LOVE that orange you put on it...Welcome to the world of air gun painting your off to a very good start......

Looks great! I'm also not a fan of the bottom of the hull being white. I'm actually glad I seen it this way as I thought about doing the hull somewhat similiar but probally going to strip the side just haven't decided color theme yet. Thinking of some sort of darker metallic blue like on bass boats as the base.
