Default Lightning 12 Rigger

Here's my new little boat - one of Mark Leyde's Lightning 12's. It's running a NovaRossi 12 5-Port with one of Glenn Quarles' Texan 12 Pipes. 65% Nitro with 12% Oil, and a Mark Shouland 1440 Back Cut Prop.

It's running pretty well although it was fussy on the mixture yesterday. Engine is still new so maybe just needs more time.

Sure do like the boat.

Ya she's fast!! Good job. I did notice the water pic-up ,Them .12 like it hot /if your cooling your pipe that's OK
Glenn's got some good ones. That cover may even help to keep that engine hot

Yeah - I remember Glenn Quarles saying the little 12's like to run hot. I squished down the tie wraps on both the water inlet line and the outlet to be about even but restricted, so it's not flowing much water through it. It does come back kinda hot but seems to be happy.

Thanks for all the comments - the boat was really fun to build and set up. There's something to be said for building something and then having it work. I can see why so many are building boats lately. I want to build another one now.

Just a little cocerned.... Maybe some day I will be able to drive well enought to run on a small puddle like that!!! Another question is what makes the 12 rigers so popular vs. the 21's? I see way more discusion on the 12's.

My opinion on that-much cheaper from a-z
Ill add to that, they are still fast and fun despite the savings and cost, main reason for the boom in 12 riggers is the simplicity of the JAE-more people with positive results and good experiences adds to more people jumping on the wagon, most riggers of the past (still present) have multiple points of adjustment and can be kind of a pain to get set-up to run correctly, JAE has a step by step guide to being almost idiot proof< kind of bad to say that but its true you follow the book to the T it will run, no other rigger has done that at least in nitro that I know of

Zippkits is the place to go for a JAE, Joe is a great guy to deal with.

I'm glad you like Mark's boat.... he's a heck of nice guy. I've had the pleasure to race against him many times w/his .12 riggers.... we are in the same club.

I spoke briefly to Mark about his rigs and the possibility of him building one for me this winter.... But not sure if I want a 12 or a 21 one yet but from the looks of it that 12 would be a handful for me so might end up being a 12!!!!

The feel of speed and great response on a rigger. That's what I like. They build very easy also . Keep all the running edges sharp . I have the .21 rigger also ,can't say witch I like better. both http://www.zippkits.com/

The .12 class is bigger in our club; there has been 5-7 at the races for the last 2 yrs. The .21 riggers didnt run at all last yr; this year there have been 3 a few times (my .21 has a bent strut that I havent fixed).

Mark makes an awesome boat. Easy to build and very strong, and the perfect shape & style IMO. Mark was really helpful through the build with quick response through e-mail or phone to answer all my stupid questions. The set-up he recommended was right on too - all I did was measure everything really carefully, kept the running surfaces square and sharp, broke in my engine and messed with props a little. And Glenn Quarles helped me with the pipe and length.

I went with a 12 boat mostly for cost - I figured that if I messed it up I wouldn't be out too much. Turns out it's a really cool boat and I learned a lot. Riggers are interesting. They are so fast it's crazy, but the way they handle makes them easy to drive. My boat feels really solid and predictable.

Lots of fun.

G.McClintic , Yes that .12 lighting is a great hull. I have built 3 Dumas Hawks as well as 2 Zippkit riggers. From a building stand point ,Zippps are easier to build. No curved edges to mess with. or Paint. I always got a drip of paint on the Hawks sponsons . I am a little bias Joe Petro is in my club. We test here in Syracuse. Sorry buddy ,were zipps around CNY I need to paint the East-Vee all wood is sealed .Going Gas

Where can you get a lightning kit or plan? Did a search and came up with a few videos and a link to this thread. Have a JAE .12 and would like to build another little rigger, I have plans for a couple of others but I've now seen that one running on nitro, the others I have plans for are electric based, Also thought about building a scaled down KEPS rigger. I have plans for it in a .21 size.
If we get lots of snow this winter I have dreams of one of the big gas powered JAEs, who knows might build something like that over an entire year or something. Spread out the credit card shock a bit.
Cheers

Toyota, I don't think you can really call it a pond,it's more like a mud puddle. It does keep you on your toes and forces you to learn throttle control as well as keeping 100% concentration on what your doing. It gets real challenging with faster boats. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnRURXBN3wI

GMc your rigger is really hauling, all these little riggers are really a hoot to run. Keep it up.
