need help on engine for outrigger
 

hi guys, i have a Dumas outrigger with a .60 super tigre airplane engine in it. i bought it from a guy here on rc universe. i wanted to know if i can put an XTM 24.7 car engine in it to drive it fot fun, and would the shaft of the 24.7 fit and work with the flex shaft to the prop in the boat. also how fast would it go. all replies appreciated.

Most car and truck engines .21 and over are using the SG type of output shaft which makes it difficult to make them work in boats.

Now wait a minute!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You want to go from an aircraft .60 that spins around 16K to a buggy .21 that spins 30K+ THROUGH A GEARBOX? How big is this rigger? You may want to do more research on this before you go spend a lot of cash. You need to remember, a buggy engine doesn't make a lot of TORQUE. Torque is as important as RPM when getting a prop to push a boat. The buggy engine is designed to give max RPM, which is run through a gearbox to lower speed and increase torque. In your rigger, you won't have a gearbox so.............................

not a buggy engine but any .21 and i checked the shaft so it will all fit. how fast would the rigger go. its about 3 feet with a 2 blade prop.

how is the Team Associated Z .28R engine for my outrigger. its got 33,000 RPM and 3.5 Horsepower. its at www.hobbypeople.net under .21 engines. thanks for the replies guys.

rudder to nose is 34 inches. also with the .28 will the boat accelerate fast and have good speed. i really need to make a decession because im going to the shop tomorrow. thanks draboater.

It's a buggy engine, so as I said above it will have very little torque. Stick with a boat engine like an O. S. .21 or .32. They can be seen here www.osengines.com You will be much happier in the long run

thanks. i noticed that the horsepower and RPM are the same on the OS marine and the engine i mentioned. does it make a big difference and will it effect speed acceleration etc. sorry with all the questions im new to outriggers and there engines. thanks

Yeah, but the OS are nice motors, I have one in my heli a .32, runs sooooooo nicely. plus a marine specific engine will have water cooling, not totally neccesary in a rigger due to the open design but most generally tend to run water cooled engines, more consistent temps despite air temp, how your driving it and what not, plus adding a water pickup is so easy, some fuel line and a brass tube to make the thing, plus if you eventually get an inboard and want your engine in it then you will have an engine that is compatible, cuase an inboard does need cooling...I'd go the OS marine route, not the cheapest but it wont dissapoint.
